I have just received word that I was approved to exhibit some of my photos at the local library for a whole month! I don't do this for a business (yet maybe) but it was a boost of confidence that they thought my photos were worthy enough to display on their second floor wall for a month. Now, what ones to pick and frame before April? Also need to make up some business cards......yikes!

Some will be from my Flikr site but I have others that aren't on there. They asked me to send them a link to my "Gallery" (Flikr) to see if I had what it took I guess to be worthy enough to hang on their wall for a month. Apparantely they liked what they saw.

Whichever it ends up, present them WELL. Also try to present what your area likes more- urban folk like urban looks, country folk like country looks.

Well done. That is awesome.
Are they paying for the printing or is that a cost you have to bear?
They must be framed at my cost, I can display for a month and leave my business cards or I could have a price tag on them right there but the library gets 30%!!!!

I think the thought of "having bought from a gallery (in this case the library)" would appeal to people.

30% seems fair seeing as you wouldn't be there without them. With enough of a mark up all costs could be covered if that is what you want.

But now we open the "What is my photo worth" can of worms

Don't look at it that way. You have a unique opportunity here.

People who are potentially buying those photos will be coming from the angle of donating to the library and supporting a local artist. Whatever you think they're worth...quadruple it. I know people who pay upwards of $500 for framed prints from libraries and local arts programs.

So I went to the Library yesterday. The hallway is at least 150 feet long and they have a track at the top of the wall with steel cables hanging down with a hook on the end. So I just need to have frames or frames with picture hanging wire to place on the hook. All of the displays there yesterday were paintings and not photos. Each one had a little business card beside the painting and each had a price on it. Let me tell you, the cheapest one was $200 and some went to $550. I was lucky enough to speak with one of artists there and was able to ask her some questions. Now its a little different I think for painters cause they spend weeks on their painting. My main question was how to know what to charge for your work and she chuckled and said "Aaahh, the age old question" It was interesting how she had her profit nailed down to the square inch of the painting. Basically here is how she justified her price:

1. Size of the painting
2. Cost of the frame + Matting
3. Library gets 30%
4. She gets the net result after all that factored in

So then she had her own little formula that if she clears $100 on a 10x20 painting....she is making about $2 per square inch for her work. Wow! What a way to look at it.
