The C&C Thread (game?)

In lieu of the recent discussion regarding critiques being either "sugar-coated" or too harsh, I figured I would present this thread. I borrowed this from an automotive forum I moderate but I thought it would be fitting here. We all have room to do better, every single one of us, and I believe this may help without being too nice or too harsh.

Here is the basic premise: You post a photo, but to be allowed to post the photo you MUST give the person above you one POSITIVE comment about their photo, and one NEGATIVE criticism about their photo.

With that being said, there are some rules that you must follow...

RULES:
1. Only 1 (ONE) photo per post

2. NO TEXT POSTS

3. You MUST give at least ONE positive and ONE negative about the photo above yours, you may give more (and it is encouraged) but you must give one of each, I know we all love positive reenforcement but we never get anywhere if the negatives aren't pointed out to us.

4. You can not post a C&C until there are two posts after your last post, this will keep the thread moving and not being just two people having a back and forth
[IE: If I post a photo, two people must then post before I can make my next post]

5. No personal attacks, we are all friends here.. No reason to drag anything into your C&C except for the photo/conditions itself.

6. If you happen to post just after someone else, and you both end up C&Cing the same photo.. just edit your post to C&C the new photo above yours.

And to get it started:

Well, I'm going to have to disqualify EoI on this one....unless it's just me, and I'm the only one who can't see his photo?

If someone else wants to jump in here, feel free.

+ good vibrant colors
+ good choice of DOF
+ low horizon works for me
+ the green and red complement each other perfectly
- I cannot find the main subject: Is it the house - why half of it is missing? Is it the horse? - then why there is the house at all? Is it the landscape? - why half of it is hidden?
- the lower left corner dirt road is distracting, it is very bright

Street shooting: Sushi Bus Girl

+ Excellent example of street photography. The subject is caught unaware and doing normal daily activity. She appears to be smiling at her own thoughts, just relaxed enjoying her break from the world.
+ Great DoF. Foreground and background are out of focus, while the subject is crisp and clean.
+ I like the repetition of patterns here with the containers.

- The vignette takes away from an otherwise great photo. Most of your work that you've shown here have vignettes, and in every case, the photo would be better without them. Vignettes work well in street photography, but this composition does not need one.

Like the colour of the water and the people, dislike the fact I cannot see more of what the lights are supposed to be illuminating (but that's just me!)

I like the subject; wish I had removed the tag from the arm and maybe tried another perspective.

Peter:

+ The idea is interesting, albeit not original.
+ I like that there is a sad face instead of a happy one.
+ The vignette actually adds something here. It helps create a darker mood to the photo.
- Finding a way to have the doll standing up straight would've had much more visual impact.
- Too much grain.

Well Anthony, I think you just ended the game! I'll try my hand at a critique though. Take it with a grain of salt as I'm still very much an amateur. ;)

+Great candid. Great expression.
+Great tonality in the B&W.
-The crop could've been framed jut slightly higher to not cut off the top of his hair.

That's all I've got :\

Shred this one:

+ good light
+ vibrant colors
+ i like the reflection, it makes the image
- positioning of the subject a little awkward, too middle for my taste and right edge of image is empty while left is busy
- is this the best angle, the grass in the water makes it look untidy -- did you have long boots and a scythe with you? :~)
- horizon a bit tilted

Peter, this image is a really great one for black and white - it adds to the "historical" feel of the image. I really am not a big fan of the vignette, however. It almost makes me feel as though I'm being forced to focus on the structure, and not the see the base of the structure.

Shot yesterday just before sunset at a charity function. This was my assistant, who did a fabulous job in covering the food and kitchen - having been a pastry chef for 16 years, I guess she knows kitchen etiquette.

I like it, but its a little blue in the background for me and the horizon might be a little off (hard to tell). But nice portrait.
