My name is Wade, I am 23, from beautiful western Michigan and have recently purchased a Nikon D3300. First day was me reading the manual and watching a dslr intro video based on beginning use of aperture and shutter speed. Here are the first pictures I have uploaded onto the computer thus far. So far, Im loving the photography hobby.

Welcome to the forums. The d3300 is a very good starter dslr. Lots of good folks around here if and when you have a question. Good shots!!

ahhhh, thank you all! Its a very relaxing hobby, and the drives around here are peaceful. Plenty of nice scenic spots, and the sunsets a beautiful. We also have the sand dunes as well. I do have a few questions, but im doing my research as well.

What would be a preferred lens for a crisp detailed close up shot?

What would be a preferred lens for a crisp long range shot? Say, a bird on the bird feeder or a deer 50ft out. Like a 55-300mm?

I have the 55-300 and it works great for what you said. Sometimes I wish it had a little more zoom but that costs $$.

If anything, id go for the 70-300, it's a little bit more but from what I have read, it is a better lens. If mime didn't come in a package deal, I would of gotten the 70-300.

anywhere up to $500 should that suffice for a decent lens?

EDIT:
and what makes a lens more expensive? What are the "specs" that make a lens worth more than the other?

The D3300 is a fine camera. With a Nikon DX 35/1.8, you'll be able to shoot very high quality photos, if you do your part correctly. Good luck.

Extremely nice images considering you read the manual and watched some videos on shutter speed and aperture! :) LOVE the torti! She is absolutely precious. A black torti once owned me. Sadly she is no longer with me. :(

As for a longer lens, the 55-300mm is an okay lens, but the Nikon 70-300mm VR is a much better lens. Even a refurbished 70-300mm VR lens would fit into your budget.

And for close up photos, some of the members here use a Raynox 150. It mounts onto the front of a lens. There are some incredible images here on Nikonites from members who use it.

This site is top notch! You guys are incredible! I love to read so I'll be soaking in tons of new information. And as for lenses I was looking at the 55 but from what I'm reading the 70 is well worth the extra. As for the microscope deal, that is something I never thought of.
