Train Picture

I took this shot this morning and would like some feedback. A couple notes, I was on the wrong side of the tracks in a lighting sense. I added the vignetting due to the drab sky and surroundings. I also noticed I should have gone higher than f5.6.

Question- The train was moving about 10-20 mph, any recommendations on shutter speed?

Personally I like the photo. Then again, I always did like trains. I'm glad you didn't suddenly try to get to the other side though.

Really good point.
I think it's a good shot, Rick. 5.6 seems to have done the job and given you even dof to see the train clearly to the end. Re: shutter speed, 1/125 or 1/250 is usually safe if you don't want motion blur, especially if it's moving toward you like this.

I find the tree distracting. It might be easy to just take it out since the sky is a uniform color.

Nice job.

I also like the vignetting, it gives the picture a "frame" if you will. Tree would be nice gone I guess but it did not make that much difference to me. The f5.6 seemed to work fine. I usually do a 9-11 if I am working with an intermediate DOF as that is usually a "sweet spot" on lenses. Your DOF was fine though. As for shutter speed, what shutter speed did you use? It seemed to freeze the train OK. A rule of thumb I was taught was shutter speed 1/focal length for the bottom end and work up from there. Since the train is not moving that fast you could get buy with no more than 1/125 I would think.

Thanks for the comments, there was a fence on the other side of the tracks so I stayed on the "dark side". I shot at 1/160, I think I should have bumped up the ISO to get a faster shutter speed and more DOF.
