Tilt shift works better for horizontal subjects. Your first image is mostly vertical, and the effect is lost.

The basketball one is an excellent example of tilt-shift done right!

Interesting technique, but have you tried shooting actual scale models to get a first-hand feel of what these should look like? I feel that rainy city scenes or nature with anything right in front of the camera kinda kill that conceptual feel.

no, i haven't. Perhaps I should try with LEGOS

Or go to some sort of hobby store with a model railroad set up, or some table top war game.

Looks cool and interesting. Makes everything look like a toy model.
