Which crop is better?

I submitted the first for the vanishing point contest because I felt the subject was more about the canal and it coming to the point. Upon cropping the photo, the subject becomes the bikes. What do you think?

I like the second crop best. How-ever, I think you may have limited yourself in the subject department.

You have actually condensed everything into your subject. But its NOT the bikes. Your subject is "Dutch Transportation".

Your shot exemplifies the importance of each mode of transportation.

Yeah, I have to go with what Pete said, too. Love the second one. Makes me feel like I'm standing there, looking out at the canal and all the scenery.

Both are very nice shots! Nice work.

Which is better? Personally I prefer the 2nd shot overall. However if your focus is what Pete mentioned (overall modes of transportation) then #1 does that best. If your focus is more on the bikes and/or the overall more impactful shot (IMHO) then it's #2.

I happen to like both, but I see 2 different subjects, the first is actually the canal, the second is the bikes in the foreground.
Just my pennies worth.

Second one gets my vote. And the Dutch transportation theme between the bikes, cars and boats is a neat idea and the second shot really shows it nicely.
My family is from that area, we left in the early 1600s though.
