2 Piece Fitted Case

A long long time ago... I can still remember how... That music used to make me...

Wait... No. That's not where I was headed. It was back in my film days when our SLR's had really nice fitted leather cases. There was a half shell for the body that attached to the tripod socket, and a front that was attached via a quick release on the bottom, which when pulled up would cover the lens and top and fasten to the back with a snap or two, with the stock camera strap being fully accessible through all of this.

Something like this: Leather Camera Case Cover Pouch Bag Grip for Nikon D3100 D3200 D3300 | eBay

I loved these as they were not much bigger than the camera, protected it well for just taking the camera itself everywhere. Plus, you just threw down the top and you were ready for the shot in an instant. Unfortunately this one here looks "a little rough" (it is actually a little backwards from the ones I am describing), but it is the ONLY facsimile I have been able to dig up.

Anyone have a source for a nicer one?

I had looked for something similar when I started with the D5300, but never really found anything I liked. I tried taking the case off my N6006 film SLR, but the dimensions on the D5300 are different enough that it didn't work.

I haven't seen anything ... seems like most people must have rolled into using sling bags or shoulder straps. Still seemed like it worked pretty well back in the day.

I had one for my XG1 years ago, sold it on ebay about 10 years back.

My Minolta Hi-Matic F and Yashica GSN both came with similar cases in excellent condition. They are in storage in a plastic bin in the closet. Just not my thing to use.

The samples posted in the link above look like just the ticket if you have one of those bodies. I'm curious, does the top section separate like the older cases did?

For $22, I'd expect the quality of that 'leather' to be less than satisfactory.

If you come across a really good one, like you are hoping for, I'm in! I've discussed this before on this forum. Apparently the problem is the LCD screen and all the buttons on the back of the body. Obviously, we all want easy access to all of the buttons at any time.

I know that Sony makes some for the A7. The shell just covers the bottom and sides, and the flap going over the lens, wrapping over the top and back and fastening on the bottom.

I have even seen one from Canon. Dunno why Nikon gets no love.

Think I may try this pleather one from eBay; I noticed another online retailer selling this same one (at a substantial markup), so maybe it's decent.

There are a number of decent fitting neoprene ones that come off quickly and are anchored to the strap somehow. I am gonna have another look at those as well.

One of the reasons I picked up the D3300 was it's size being almost that of a point and shoot, and having it with me most of the time; but lugging it around in a big ol' bag or holster just isn't an option.
