ND filter kit

So... I'm wanting to get a filter kit, or filter and step down rings this year before I go down to Florida to see Dad. Of COURSE, I've looked at the Lee Filter kits, but buying those would mean no trip down south, as they are NOT inexpensive!

Anyone have suggestions for some decent filter suggestions that won't break the bank? Hoping to catch some long exposure ocean shots around the piers and such. From past convos, I'm thinking about a 10-stop, or close to it.

Thanks in advance!

After a lot of pondering I decided to buy just one filter: Hoya Pro ND100. This is a 6-stop filter. I might add a 10-stop filter later, but right now this one seems to be just fine.

I used to use Cokin filters and still have a holder and a few filters, but their quality is not great. Filters are cheap and look cheap: no anti-reflection coating. Just simple tinted plastic squares. I don't know about Lee, they look higher quality than Cokin. But the biggest problem with using a 6- or 10-stop ND might be light seeping around the holder. Cokin is definitely not sealed for that.

I picked up the Hoya HMC ND's, ND4 and ND8. Cant remember the logic on the 4/8, but kind of seemed middle of the road. I haven't used them yet, but like you plan to use when I go to FL this year.

Normally I'm totally a Hoya HD filters sorta guy but I got a hold of a ten-stop filter from ICE (ICE ND 1000) and so far, I have to say it's working out really, really well.
I'd never have known it was a $30 filter.

I bought a Cokin set of slot in ND filters and the colour cast was awful. Before going down the expensive road, I bought a cheap £10 CAMDIOX ND1000 72mm off Ebay. It's great, no colour cast what so ever. At this price it is affordable to buy filters for each size lens to avoid using step down rings as these increase the space between the filter and front element which could make flares more of an issue. Here's a quick example with no colour casting.

I bought a variable 10 stop SYRP. It comes with step down rings (2) and the quality and packaging (comes with a leather pouch) are excellent. Amazon stock them.

I am leaning towards the Hoya Pro 1 64x...I want to shoot seascapes and waterfalls...I'm thinking I won't need a 30 sec exposure and also won't be shooting wide open so I might be able to get away with a 6 stop. I'm headed up to Cape Cod in two weeks and hope to have it by then.
