Lightning trigger comparison

Well I have owned a Nero lightning trigger for a few years now and have been quite happy with it. But there are some things now that I am finding are a pain. I am not going to mention the hot shoe dummy or anything like that, I will be referring to real live testing out in the field.

I find the Nero to be very touchy and can either take a lot of shots or will miss the money shot if not set up right. I am also finding as the battery power is getting lower that I am needing to increase the sensitivity. I am also finding that I am missing daytime lightning shots (very annoying). I think if you are going to buy a trigger it should work in the day great as at night time it is easy to wait for the lightning in bulb mode if need be.

I have ordered a 'Lightning Trigger' from the states which I hope will be here next week, and I will be trialing these side by side. The new one is twice as much as my old one in price but is alot more intuitive and apparently can discern between in cloud lightning and CG lightning (Cloud to ground), it also apparently 'will' get the first leader in the bolt so I am very keen to try it out :) so stay tuned for more testing and results.

Ok for those interested here are the two lightning triggers that I now own.

The NERO Price $199

And the LIGHTNING TRIGGER Price $434

The NERO does, Sound, Lightning, Laser, Timelapse, HDR, DIY

The Lightning Trigger does, Lightning

The NERO has alot of sensitivity settings in each mode.

The LT has Off, S, M modes no adjustments.

The NERO's hotshoe is just a slide on one, but has never come loose.

As you can see it has varying options for Flashes etc. The Battery lid is underneath meaning you need to take the NERO off the hotshoe to change batteries. But I am yet to change the 2 x AAA batteries.

The front has a single LED that picks up light changes.

The LT comes in a nice pouch, The hot shoe is a plastic thread clamp down type, only one jack point on the LT, the front sensor size is huge compared to the NERO.

I am hoping to do a comparison today but I broke the cable that went into the D800E from the NERO, so unless the cable is compatible I may need to compare using the D600 (NERO) and D800E (LT). So some camera speed may influence the outcome.

Stay tuned.
