Hello, I have a Manfrotto tripod 190XPROB and the Manfrotto Ball Head 496RC2.

But, I have the following lens AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED that has that big ring holder.

Just wondering what kind of tripod head should I get ? Or do I need another tripod ?

Thanks for your help,

That big "ring holder" is the tripod collar. The purpose of the tripod collar is move the balance point off the bayonet mount because the lens is so heavy. The tripod collar will attach to your existing ball head just as if you were using the tripod mount on the camera body.

If you need a suggestion for a good ball head, though, that's a different question.

Thanks Horoscope Fish, I think i need a suggestion for a ball head that might fit my tripod. I did play around with the collar, move it clockwise and the other way, released the mount but I did not see the main logic. Sorry for my stupidity :).

I use ARCA SWISS ball head myself! They can handle pretty much anything in the way of a DSLR and lens! :)

I have one that rates like 130lbs max and another older one that rates 90lbs max! :)

So I'm a huge fan of them! :D

Possibly depends on your main subject interest,if its fast moving sport, wildlife ect then a Gimble head is worth thinking about.

If your unsure what one is

Tripod heads should be chosen per the subject matter. ANY head (given a proper weight rating) will work well for any lens. It's the subject that needs to be taken into consideration. Gimble, ball, fluid, 3-axis, pistol, one-way, geared.... all are designed for specific subject matter.
