Just saw the announcement that Western Digital is adding a battery and SD card to a new storage device. This might be an easier way to make mobile image backups.

Very cool, though you can't beat a laptop for some quick and proper glances. Wonder what the extra tidbits will cost.

There have been other, similar devices around for some time that allow you to dump the contents of your SD card to a portable, internally-powered hard drive, but they've all been a bit sketchy in my opinion with hugely mixed reviews regarding their reliability. This WD offering, though, is pretty much exactly what I've been waiting for: a portable (backup) hard drive I can dump a memory card to, on the fly, without needing a PC to power and/or facilitate, the file transfer. Thank GAWD it's USB 3.0 as well...

The wireless option is just a big, fat bonus as far as I'm concerned.

It's good that WD are coming into this because it means that other main stream manufacturers may follow with their own products. The issue for me is that some of these devices, particularly from WB are not regular hard drives inside the enclosure. Therefore if the thing fails, it much more expensive to get the data back. I'd use one of these for a backup, but not to move data from SD cards while on a trip.

Lacie are nearly there with their wireless Lacie Fuel unit. It just needs an SD card slot & I'm sold! :)
