Silly Lens Hood Question

Hi all...

I just bought a D3200 Friday with the 18-55 VR lens. I want a lens hood. I like the tulip type and was looking at the HB-32. Will this hood fit the lens? And will it work correctly, meaning when It's at the widest angle will the hood be visible in the frame? I'm very new and this is going to come across silly to some of you. Don't rip this post up, just help me out with suggestions...

thanks...

The front element of that lens rotates as you zoom, so a tulip (or petal) type hood will not work.

You need a circular hood. Nikon says the HB-45.

I saw that the HB-45 was what they recommend. Now I know why. Thanks Sparky.

Now... That HB-45 looks real shallow. Is it even worth putting it on? Is there any hood that's better?

Thanks

There are 2 18-55mm DX VR lenses. If the lens has a Roman numeral II after the G it is the later generation and uses a HB-69 hood. The older lens uses the HB-45.

You can confirm this on nikonusa.com by finding the lens and look at the accessories tab.

Not sure about the HB-32.

My job has a points plan where we can accumulate points and buy things from a catalog. I'm about two months away from a 55-200mm VR lens. I may want a hood that works for both. I now assume that the front of that lens is going to rotate too and I still won't be able to use the cool tulip type hood.

I posted a note right before your last post about the 18-55. The 18-200mm will likely come with a hood in the box.

It's best to get a hood that is just barely out of the FOV of the lens at minimum focal length. Putting a hood designed for the 18-55 on the 55-200 isn't going to help as much as one designed for the 55-200.

You guys have been great help. I'm going to order an HB-45. And I see the 55-200 does come with a hood so I'll be good to go...

Thanks again

I have both kit lenses, live is very sunny Southern California, and have never found the need to use the hood on either. That said, I do not shoot much landscape or long view images, so that may be a factor.
