    Camera Stores in NYC

I am travelling to the Great U.S of A. in October for a six week holiday and while there we are spending about a week in New York City (Staying in Central Manhatten). It appears that there are stores everywhere that sell everything... Its mind boggling.

I will be looking for a decent sized camera and accessory store somewhere in Manhattan to have a look for a few bits and pieces, bags, straps, Nikon lenses & bodies etc, filters etc.
Can anyone recommend a good store they have had experience with personally. Or a good retail chain store to search for. I am familiar with all of the Australian retailers, but have no idea what the major American retailers are. I have done a fair bit of searching on Google but have yet to find a decent sized store with decent reviews on service and price.

I would be looking for a store that holds quite a bit of stock, as i have limited time and i want to walk in and browse.
I will mainly be looking for a decent camera strap, filters and possibly a new Nikon DX body (D5200/7100 range) if my wallet is too fat.

    Walmart?

No walmart, not for camera stuff, limited selection. These two places have EVERYTHING. B&H Photo Video Digital Cameras, Photography, Camcorders
Photography, Digital Cameras, Lenses, Electronics - 8PM Shipping - Adorama Camera There are others but I'd start with these two.

B&H and Adorama like nickt said. I've gotten plenty of stuff from them online, but live to far away to visit in person. Consider yourself lucky, and go to those. haha.

WalMart??? Good Lord, man, no!!! Go to Adorama. If they haven't got what you need there, you don't need it, or they haven't made it yet!

LOL, I was trying to be nice, but that pretty much sums up my feelings on Walmart for any shopping.

They are not chains, they are both the one and only. Good competitive prices. They both keep odd hours for religious reasons, so be aware they are closed Saturday and close early on Friday. You might find this article interesting. B&H Photo Video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've haven't been to these stores in person in years, but it was a big 'wow' for me. With free or inexpensive shipping that usually arrives in 1-2 days for me, its not worth venturing into the city even though I'm only 60 miles away. If you have never been to a city like NYC, you will certainly have an experience and see why a country boy wouldn't want to drive there. NYC is best experienced on foot and public transportation. My wife drags me in for a show once a year or so. Be sure to have a dirt water dog! (hot dog from street vendor) Enjoy your trip.

I don't spend a dime at Walmart personally.

I agree, I'd love to visit B&H and or Adorama one day. If I was in NYC these would be on the top of my list.

    Travel safe!

I have not been to very many large cities at all. I can count them on one hand with fingers to spare! I expect my head will explode when i get there so better to have done my research prior! Thanks for the advice. We will mostly be walking and utilizing the hop-on hop-off bus tours to get around a bit.

I'd add 42nd Street Camera to your list for visiting if you're there, but definitely hit B&H - it'll blow your mind.

And since we're on the subject, I was forced to step into Walmart the other day and immediately felt as if my weight should be 40 pounds higher and my IQ 40 points lower just to fit in. It's a sad place that gets none of my money if I can possibly help it (it was my first trip in to one in 2 years).
