did u break the plastic mount on ur 18-55mm 18-105mm 18-135mm 55-200mm lens?

how many times?
my partners daughter has broken hers 3 times now. I buy the plastic mount from ebay vendors in asia. they all look exactly the same. Ive bought 6 of them (all from different vendors over different time) so to make sure I get a better quality statistics wise, but they all look the same. exactly.

this is the 3rd time im repairing it and I wonder is this something that has happened often to you?
hers is the 18-105mm. what a POS kit lens.
I ordered a metal mount now from ebay. costs $30 shipped.
I cant repair it now though cause it broke where one of the screws were and there is no screw.

No...I've had mine (18-105 and 55-200) for 4 years, and I swap lenses all the time and haven't damaged a single one. Check her technique on swapping lenses.

She's broken the mount on the same lens three times? Wow... I'd have some questions about that.

I've seen a few broken mounts at the college, all of them plastic, but I've also been at the job for fifteen years. I don't recall for sure if they were 18-105's or not but I never was fond of the 18-105 anyway. When the girlfriend dropped "hers" (if you know what I mean), killing the AF, we got an 18-140 as a replacement. The 18-140 has a metal mount and it's a better lens generally speaking IMO.

It is a weak point but i wonder if with you being a busy pro and doing quick lens changes if she is trying to emulate you without having your experience, three sounds like a lot.

Yes, shes learning photography in HS. she doesnt have such a gentle hand sometimes cause I think shes nervous. 3 times is a lot and none were from dropping. the mount is not so sturdy. oem or aftermarket so that doesnt help but it doesnt bother me the fact that I have to repair it as Im more than willing to help but 3 within a timespan of a year is a lot. she had a photo project a while ago and I let her use my gear. I showed her how to properly change the lens. I told her to only do it one way and thats to sit down and lay the camera in her lap with the mount up. more dust but less potential for dropping. and she did it decently, but nervous hands. she didnt have the easy finesse. she was trying to lineup the holes by "searching" with the twisting motion back and forth while pressing in to the mount and thats what the issue is. I tried to show her again how to lineup the camera and lens and then it was better. but not smooth. shes trying to push it in and I think she may be pulling it out. instead of letting the camera just slip in and out. like theres a push in/turn technique instead of lining it up and letting the lens just slip in froim its own weight.

I dont think that her trying to emulate me is the issue. shes just nervous with it. like many here who can do a one hand lens mount/dismount shes fidgedy a bit.

the metal mount should help with that but shes also not the most organized. she leaves lenses without their caps on. you see theirs a little bit of neglect.
I need to try and install in her some care to the gear. no gear, no pictures. no photography then frustration kicks in. you all know how it goes. image me taking a lens from you for a few days.

That's a tough one...it seems pretty clear she's not being careful with the gear. I'd hate to put money into better gear only to have the same thing happen.

Make HER pay for the repairs. Wouldn't be surprised if she becomes more careful.

I'm starting to feel like this is really none of my business, but I'll go so far as to say I have to agree with hark: I think some kind of investment, be it financial or otherwise, might work wonders on those "fidgety", mount-breaking hands of hers. I could see being jittery and dropping a lens but breaking even those plastic mounts takes a little something beyond being a tad nervous, IMO.

its true. but this time ill talk to her and watch how she dis/mounts the lens. I think shes using pushing/pulling pressure when shes doing it and I need to stop her from doing that. those 3 tabs that fit into the mount are very small.

the metal mount should help solve it cracking all the time but I have to change her technique. shes not dropping the lens. shes just not gentle with it.

true. the girls 17 she breaks her cellphone allt he time as well. very butter fingers. Im also clumsy but I know I cant be rough with my gear cause it brings me money. she doesnt have much to lose. I cant charge her money. its my ladys daughter. shed kill me and not talk to me for a week. ill have a talk with her cause usually I drop it off and thats it. but if I talk to her and explain she needs to care for her gear she will put effort.
