D7200 or D750

I'm looking for thoughts on the above cameras. I'm looking to upgrade from my D90 and these 2 or my shortlist. I can just about go to the D750 but not sure if it's a good investment, do I really need full frame etc would love v to hear what other Nikon users think.

Well, what do you shoot primarily, subject-wise? Do you have any FX glass now and if not, are you prepared for the added expense of FX glass? Yes, you CAN shoot DX glass on an FX body but believe you me, you're not going to want to do that. Just trust me on this.

What Paul said. Without knowing what you like to shoot it's tough to recommend one over the other, and "more" isn't always better. If you find yourself at the long end of your zooms a lot then chances are FX is going to frustrate you because you're losing 33% of your reach.

I have a good friend who went from the D90 to the D7200 and she couldn't be happier. Absolutely thrilled with the bump in IQ she got from it without having to invest in new glass.

Thanks for the replies, I shoot anything that catches my eye! Primarily I like wildlife and I have done a handful of weddings for friends and family and might go down that road a bit more. I do have a couple of fx compatible lenses but I think the extra crop factor will be a benefit to me, think I am leaning towards the 7200 but I'm dithering.

Tough call. The D750 is my go-to camera while the D7100 is the one I reach for when I feel need it. I don't shoot wildlife a lot but if you do you might find yourself missing the crop factor. Then too, if you've been bitten by the FX bug I can tell you the itch is NOT simply going to go away by itself.

I'm going to keep my D90 as well so I'll have a camera with crop factor on it. Might try to get to a camera shop to try them both out, see which feels better to me

Just from what I read here, the D7200 might be the best choice for your needs and the cheapest way to go in a lot of ways! You save on glass and camera, while still being able to do all the shots you like to do! :)

I went FX and I never regretted it, but getting a good DX to combo with my best FX was a must for me! :D

If you need good high ISO, shoot a lot of landscapes, the D750 is the way to go. On the other hand for general purpose shooting )any thing that catches fancy) a DX sensor may be better, especially if you have DX glass.

Left to me, I would go FX.

If you're going to have only one camera get the D7200. The D750 is superb (I have one), but I need a DX camera for wildlife. It's a huge step up from the D90 and I'm sure you'll love it.

Hi there,

I have owned a Nikkon D80 for 7 years now and thinking to update to a D7200 (DX) or D750 (FX). I own two lenses: (a) AF-S 18-135 3.5-5.6G DX (no VR) and (b) AF-S 50mm 1:1.4G (FF). I was also thinking to acquire a 70-200 for a time now.

Thanks for your comments on this thread too. I have been doing a lot of research lately and cannot decide whether moving to FX or stay with DX. My thoughts:

- Moving to FX body will require buying a new "all-purpose" FF lense since DX lenses will work on FX bodies but IQ will go down to approx. 10MB (from 24Mb). 10MB is not bad (same as my D80), but do not want to waste the full potential of a 24 MB sensor

- DX body will work fine with my current lenses, even though the 50mm is acting as a 75mm due to cropping but providing same or even better IQ than on FX bodies.

- 60-70% of new nikkor lenses are FF type. Regardless of the body type, I tend to think that FF lense should work better, even though they are heavier than DX lenses.

- Use: Serious hobby. Lots of traveling, city photography and family.

- Money wise, price difference (where I live) is around US$ 400-500 (body only)

Then, my questions/concerns are:

- Should I "retire" my 18-135mm and get a new all purpose FX lense along with the new body? I believe I should do that with the D750, but not sure with a D7200.

- Should I focus on FX lenses only from now on if I get the D7200? Pretty sure I should do that if I get the D750

- Based on Nikkon's approach to FX vs DX lenses (more research and investment on FX than DX material?), should I move directly to FX? It would be worth it to invest in a DX body if I am getting FX lenses?

What are your thoughts? I'm not being able to make up my mind

Thank you in advance for your advise

The decision is yours to take. It's impossible for me to advise you because your use of the camera is probably what should guide you to the right camera. If you want a low light camera with great IQ for general purpose (portraits, landscapes, weddings), then the 750 would be my choice. But if you are a nature, wildlife, bird photographer, then the reach of the 7200 would be better for you.

This being said, both are exceptional cameras and can probably produce very similar results if used by a knowledgeable photographer. From just looking at normal sized prints made in good light situation I don't think a common person could tell you every time which camera took which picture, even trained eyes could have a low average of guessing.

So it's not an easy decision to take, maybe your wallet should help you to decide more than me or others on this forum. Better lenses on a DX can make better results than lower quality lenses on an FX (if we take out the low light situations where FX is a clear winner).

So good luck and happy shopping.

I shot with DX only till recently. My last camera was the D7100 and i is a great camera. What I did was start updating my lenses a while back a little at the time. I first bought the 70-300 to use on my D7100. Great lens I them replaced my 18-140 DX lens with the 24-130 FX lens. I shot both of these on my d7100 and the results are fantastic. Then when I was ready to move to my new D750 I already had the glass to shoot it with. You do not want to go with DX glass on the FX body. It is just not worth it

Don, Marcel, thank you very much for your help.

I am still undecided. I might go with the DX body while updating my FX lenses... but still not sure.

In any case, thank you!

I think you would be very happy with the D7200. It is a great camera. I am keeping my D7100 since there are certain times that is would be a better choice for shooting for me.
