I was looking at mobile phones yesterday with my wife and was astounded to see phones at nearly £800.00 ( you can do the exchange rates). What I want to know and dont understand is why do you need 16mp on a phone? Can anyone explain please.

I suppose they add it to the list of features of the phone,

some people are happy with the camera on the phone, to post pictures on facebook/twitter, to be honest the cameras on the new phones are quite good.

I am stunned at the cost of many things in this era and easy credit often serves to allow buyers to pay even more and sew seeds of their financial ruin. I don't get it either.

Probably because it exists and sounds better, but also lots of apps and music I suppose. And I know several people that still have every photo they ever took still on their phone.

I have not seen any $1231.32 US phones here. A iPhone 6 Plus is $749.00 US.
Now why would anyone want one? The cameras are fantastic. The most important thing about that camera phone is that you always have it with you. As for the rest of the phone? The apps are endless. The photo apps are great. Need to know if the sunset will look good at a place you are going to? There is an app for that. Need a DOF guide for all your lenses? There is an app for that. News, weather, traffic, trip planning with GPS. It is all there. I have all my doctor's appointments set up, even those that are 6 months from now and I get a reminder the day before to alert me and then a second alert an hour before travel time so I have time to get dressed etc. In my family we like text better than phone calls. First they are short and sweet and we can deal with them as we have time and most importantly we have proof that "I told you so!"

I actually like standing on the sidelines and watching the world go by. Yes, it would be nice to have all that functionality in my pocket all the time, but I'm not willing to pay the price for it, and I'm not talking about the $600. People are not seeing it now, but I think the dependence is going to be very costly very soon, kind of like dependence on grocery stores and not knowing how to grow your own food. What I need to work on getting is my ham license. A ham radio and an FE2 and I'll be a happy camper.

Edit: Posting this comment has motivated me to put an FM2n at the top of my priority list.

That would be me as well. Despite being married with a family, I still do not own a cell phone of any type. My wife carries a low-tech phone. Being on tap 24x7 has no allure for me, but I'll likely have to capitulate one of these years.

With traveling more since we are both retired and kids in different places it is nice to be able to stay in touch. Also in many locations when we are out with our cameras it is easy to get turned around so bringing out the phones and being able to see where we are via GPS on the map we can easily see where we are and how to get back to where we are parked. So it is a real safety tool. One of the best things is when my wife wants me to go shopping with her I can head to a more interesting area of the store like electronics or tools and when she is ready to leave she can text me and tell me to meet her at the door.

They are great and a nightmare. While on vacation it was great looking everything up on trip advisor as we went. Reviews of restaurants and especially activities/attractions saved a lot of time/money and bad choices. The downside is I'm always at work via Email/text/cell even while on vacation.

One thing I like about text and Facebook messenger is that I get a notification that someone has sent me a message and I can decide if I want to answer it now, later or never. I have a smart watch also that vibrates when a message comes in and tells me who it is from so I don't even have to get my phone out to tell who it is from

Why do I need a 1500 watt amp in my car? I just do.
