That's why I never buy backup stuff... Every time I do, I forget I have it after cursing and swearing up a blue streak...then I remember... except then, I forget where I put the backup...;)

I always have a spare battery and a spare SD card in my bag. I also know that it's there. Got tired of leaving the house with the SD card in the computer and the battery in the charger.

This is my worst nightmare... so part of my getting ready routine is to format the memory card in camera before I leave the house... this ensures 1) I can turn my camera on and have therefore put the battery in and 2) I have a memory card in the camera.

We brought our Canon A2300 to the wedding on Saturday, and my wife wanted me to take a picture with it. When I turned it on, it said 'No Memory Card.' Then I remembered that I left it in the computer. I just laughed. I didn't care. I had my FE2. Who needs a digital Canon when you have an FE2?:D

Edit: I remembered to bring an extra roll of film, which I used.

When I get home from a shoot I take the SD card out and leave the camera out on the table with the Card door up and open. It does not get closed or put up till the Card comes out of the computer and back in the camera. Same for the battery. I have 5 batteries for the two cameras. When I get home from a shoot I pull the battery out and put it on charge. I then take a fully charged battery and put it in the camera so it is ready to go. Also for uncharged batteries the plastic cap is never put on. That way I know it needs charging and once I pull it off the charger the cap goes back on and it goes back in the camera case. Yes I have forgotten the battery or SD card before so that is the reason for the OCD behavior now.

Learned that lesson the hard way last summer after a 2 1/2hr drive to an awesome rocky state park only to find is left the battery charging at home. Now I've always got my spares in the bag!

That's one of the nice things about a D7100, 2 SD card slots, Ive tried to figure out a way to carry an extra battery, other than the one in my backpack, that's the only fix I've got.

I can't remember when I have had to change a battery during the day since I start with a fresh battery before each shoot. Next month should be a good test of that since I will be shooting the National Parks in Utah and Arizona. My battery supply better hold up.

All my Nikon's are gripped except the D7100, with extra batteries and cards for all of them! Considering my poor memory, I figure it was wise to be better safe with plenty of both batteries and cards, than to be sorry an unable to get that shot that excites my creativity!
So a battery grip for my D7100 too, is on my buy list for the future! :D

If you're not too afraid of looking like a nerd (I'm not), there are a lot of black Cordura nylon pouches on the market for police, military and civilian use. They are made for all kinds of things, like latex gloves, pepper spray, pistol magazines, folding pocket knives, etc. I'll bet I could find one that fits a Nikon battery perfectly. Wear it on your belt like a Buck knife and forget about it - until the battery in your camera dies. After a week, you'll be used to it. I've been wearing a Leatherman on my belt for almost 30 years, and I intend to continue until my wife or my kids put me in a home and take all my knives away!;)

If I carried a DSLR, a battery wouldn't be any different.

When ever I pick up the camera at home, I just switch it on and check if the battery is on, and if there is space in the card. I use USB for downloading the images, so my card never leaves the camera. The worst that has happened is when I put the battery for charging, picked up the camera and switched it on at the gate - no display. Rushed back and put the battery.

As a routine, I always take an snap of some thing in the house before going out and check the image. That takes care of all the issues.
