What's up with this?

The other day a member posted info on a video downloader for Chrome. Since I use Chrome and not Firefox, I decided to install it. Now I've been getting ads or warnings when I come to Nikonites (and ONLY when I'm on this site). They usually open a second window or tab when it happens, and links were added where I bookmark web sites although I didn't add them myself.

I ran a full system security scan (Norton) which didn't catch anything. Since I assume it's happening from the video downloader, what is the most effective way of uninstalling it? It doesn't appear to be a program as there aren't any recently installed programs showing up within my control panel. This was some type of add-on feature to Chrome.

Just now when I highlighted the above text to create a bold font, the following opened up in a new tab. Since my security software isn't catching this, what is the best way to deal with this? Thanks for any information.

FWIW, I saw the same thing when I added the Chrome extension over the weekend. This was on my Mac, so it's definitely related to the extension and not something else. Guess I'll stay with Firefox for the video downloads for now.

Thanks for the comments. I'll take a look and see where it gets removed as an extension. RocketCowboy, thanks for confirming it to be the culprit. I might give Firefox a try even if it is only to use their video downloader.

I thought something was a little odd when I downloaded the video downloader extension into chrome, and then it prompted me to download another extension ... the video downloader helper as well. Don't know if you went through the process and installed both, but it could be that the second extension is the real culprit. Either way, I've disabled them in Chrome for now.

Those extensions have always made me nervous, TBH. I only run a few... an ad-blocker and a FB assistant, both only after discussing with people that I highly trust. Even then, they STILL don't settle with me 100%.

After removing the Chrome extension, I noticed my computer wasn't running as quickly as it usually does especially while editing photos. Normally I have both Bridge and PCC open while I peruse photos from a folder. Since removing the extension, my computer slowed WAY down. It was ridiculously slow. It took quite a bit longer to save files, too. My security software (Norton 360) didn't catch anything, but since I was at the end of my subscription with it, I decided to try ESET instead. My choice was based on a Consumer Reports ratings article from June 2014 which is the last time they rated security software. Even PCMag gave it high ratings.

The malware scan caught something and was able to clean it. Nothing showed up in the virus scan. Today after working in Bridge and PCC and while looking through photos in folders, my computer is back to its normal speed! Stay away from that Chrome video download extension! ;)
