Protecting yourself

My apologies if this breaks the rules for inflammatory and/or political posts (and if the moderators feel it does please remove it) but after some recent conversations and reading some articles I am curious to know how many people on this forum practice concealed carry when they are out photographing in remote or questionable locations. I realize this really only applies to those of us in the US and this is in no way meant to trigger a debate on gun control in the US. Just a simple yes/no answer and if not do you take a different approach to protecting yourself and your gear in those situations?

I conceal carry everywhere it's legal. 'Nuff said.

Of course, being a 6'3", 275lb bald man helps discourage any wannabes.

Yes I do. By way of explanation I love hiking off-trail in the deserts of S. California because I find it a serene and hauntingly beautiful place I can escape to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban living. That being said, the desert is a strange place (and I mean *really* strange) that often draws an even stranger fringe element; people who often don't appreciate company, even in passing, for reasons all their own. I'm also frequently within spitting distance of the international border which brings it's own set of... Considerations... shall we say.

I'm not sure i would need to even if i could. Montreal is a pretty safe city, with some areas becoming a bit dodgy as night falls. As Pretzel pointed out, size does deter: 6'4" & 280, but not bald ;) Though, i am developing a bald batch at the back/top of my head. If i was allowed to and really needed to, this is what i would carry:

Kimber America | Tactical Ultra II | Tactical II | 1911

Expensive taste? I know. But i love Kimber .45's. Beautiful craftsmanship and you can't go wrong with a .45.

Not a chance of any protection like that here. I tend to avoid going places that "might" be dubious, but that limits what you can and cannot do with a camera.
My daughter is a black-belt / jujitsu sensei, and her club leader has always said if someone tries to rob from you, give up the goods... you can always buy new... you cannot buy a new life.

How far is Montreal from Ottawa? The savages have no boundries.

Personally, I never leave home without my little friend.

As a matter of fact, I'm going to an Arboredum after I close this post.
I'll be among the peaceful flowers and other plants, but I'll still be packing. I'd rather have it and not need it than.....

Love, love, love my Kimber Team Match II...

CC is a Springfield XD compact. Still .45 ACP, though because... Well, .45 ACP doesn't really *require* explanation, does it?

While the 1911 platform is a true thing of beauty, it has been out paced for years by the likes of Glock, Springfield, and so many others. I still own a very special 1911, but it sits in a safe. I prefer this in .45acp.

Very jealous! No, a .45 needs no explanation whatsoever. 1911 frame is a classic. Just can't go wrong ;)

lol. I don't have to go to Ottawa to be close to "savages". There is plenty of gun play here in Montreal, but it is confined to street gangs and the mob. As a matter of fact, the Montreal police have shot and killed more innocent bystanders then any gang related shooting has - zero actually. Therefore, who would i really be protecting myself from? lol:p

Anyhow, CC is never going to happen for me. I will just have to rely on my street smarts ;)

Huge fan of my Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm, but a Springfield XD Sub-Compact .40 is on my short list. Love the finish/feel of the Springfield firearms!

I am a hard advocate for concealed carry, as well as defensive tactics/self defense training. I have trained and taught traditional martial arts and defensive tactics for the last 24 years, and I used to work in the psych ward of a maximum security prison. I am a "fan" of Dave Grossman's wolf/sheep/sheepdog mentality, and I use a lot of his ideas in my classes. I don't think that anyone should live in fear. I carry everywhere that I go, and I carry when I am at home.

But I also enjoy shooting, period. Especially long range precision.
