It finally happened...

After many attempts to stir my wife's "interest" in photography with the D3100, and her answering with a "not my thing", a situation has risen for which she would like a nicer photograph when it can't be scheduled for me to shoot (which I help with as often as I can).

With that in mind... the words came out... "Can you show me how to use your old camera so I can grab a couple of pics tomorrow?"

CRASH COURSE!

I discussed aperture mode a bit, set the format to RAW and the ISO to 200 (she said she was shooting outside), showed her where the shutter speed was and discussed the lowest number she should see in the viewfinder, and I set her free with the D3100 and the 18-55mm. Half press focus, full press shoot, check the shot here... with shooting in RAW, I was fairly confident that I'd be able to help her get what she wants at the end of the day.

Later... she called to say, "I'm shooting inside instead, what do I do?" ::what::

Look for the "green camera symbol" and GO AUTO!

Ugh... Pop-up flash alert.

What about Auto ISO with a minimum shutter speed set to, say, 1/125? That wouldn't be too hard to walk someone through over the phone...

Or you can go full Auto.

Yep, its not the person running the camera, its all the camera and lens doing the work. Get that all the time, even got one the other day that someone said thanks for you football pictures, they were great.... Then from the background comes the comment, Its because of that lens.....Hum, how do you respond to that. I almost held the lens up without the camera and said here, see if you can get a picture.
@Pretzel, I leave our D40 on Green mode as my wife calls it and I just fix it in post. I tried to explain the other modes, but got a look from her like I had a third eye.

My wife went from a Kodak Easy share to the Nikon Coolpix L120 to the D5100 and now she shoots the D7000 and does her own processing in Photoshop and can even remove people and building. That always makes her happy. The mode of shooting is not as important as seeing the shot and getting it on camera. Making it easy for your spouse to get a good photo even if it is in Program or Auto is more important than getting all tied up in the process. Getting them to learn just a little every once in a while when something comes up is the easiest way to keep them interested.

Getting my wife interested in photography makes is easier for me to buy new equipment and to travel to photographically interesting places when we get a few days off together. Not everyone is a geeky about photography as we are.

As an update...

Not sure if she heard the slight stress in my voice when I said "GO AUTO" or if they just couldn't fit the group into a room, but she ended up getting a few outside shots in Aperture mode, and the shots were easy to edit. WIN!

Perhaps now that she's used it, a little more interest will pop up here and there!
