No pain no gain?

Ok so I'm 50 in Feb and then in August our son is having a big wedding. As a present to myself I've decided to get a bit fitter in order that my stomach is not the most prominent thing in my birthday pictures. I'm aiming to lose between 14-21lb.

To help achieve this I've started a diet and bought one of these. Let's see how successful it is.

I wish you all the best.

Now i lost after one year 24kgs. I just do exercise every day and I eat until full. Not one bite more even there is something left on the plate.

The best plan that worked for my wife when she was trying to lose weight was Weight Watchers where you have "points" assigned to every food item. She followed that to a T and lost a ton of weight. Good luck to you

I also lost weight by mild exercise and major food reduction, especially snacks between meals. Reduce carbs (rice in my case) and take a lot of fluids to fill the stomach, it works. I reduced 3" from my belly in two months.

Good luck! Those rowers are a full and good workout. My trainer has set me up with that and kettlebells mixed together on my "core" days. I hit 50 earlier this month, and although I didnt get where I wanted to be (weightwise) I am getting there slowly... and I am fitter and healthier than I have been in years.

Oh, one last thing... dont forget your rest days to let your body recover!

Good luck with your goals

I lost somewhere between 10 and 15kg (22-33lbs) a couple of years back. Only reason I am not sure of the amount is I didn't have scales at the time.

I counted calories, and I exercised EVERY day (walking or table tennis). I was shocked at the calorific value some food had and as a result rarely eat pasta, rice or potatoes. I substitute vegetables instead. It was hard sticking to a 1200 cal diet at first but got easier as I went along. I used a website to help me (Australian Online Diet and weight loss club. Lose weight for good!).

One thing I did do though is have Sunday every week as an anything goes day. At first I really pigged out on Sundays but found as time went on I needed/wanted less chocolate and sugary stuff.

Oh...and don't weigh yourself every day. Do it weekly...naked...and before eating but after you empty your bladder :D It also helps to measure your chest, waist, hips and upper thighs to get a good idea of what is happening ;)

I am not longer on a diet but am slowly seeing the weight creep back on. If I go up a dress size I'll knuckle back down a bit. I went down quite a few dress sizes and don't want to go back.

It's also easier if you have buddies doing the same to give you support. Keep posting here and we'll support you :D

Best of luck. 8 years ago I went on the same crusade using an Elliptical trainer and was able to drop 50 much needed pounds. I managed to keep them off for 5 years. The last 3 year have, unfortunately, been a recovery period. I'm back on the horse, but speaking from experience they were easier to drop at 42 than at 50. Then again, I was far less enthusiastic about local breweries back then as well. LOL

11 months to lose 20 pounds... that's a pretty big goal... try not to over do it... ;)

Fred,

The target date is for my fiftieth in Feb, it just happens to fit nicely with the wedding later in the year, but nice try :)

I think I can realistically do it in five months in a sustainable way as crash weight loss is a waste of time.

Thanks for all the support and suggestions, it sounds like I'm not alone.

In reality the main weight loss will come from diet and I use an app called my "fitness pal" which is free. This is pretty cool as it counts carbs amongst other things. I'm actually type 1 diabetic so I take insulin 4 times a day and knowing the exact carbs is really useful. Insulin causes weight gain, but exercise and weight loss reduces the amount required so it's a win win situation.

I'm liking the rower so far in a sadistic kind of way. I've done running in the past but really don't enjoy it. Makes you wonder why I joined the army really!!

Two years ago I was at the weight I'm aiming for and was on target for a 10k running event, then I had a cycling injury.

I'll report back when I hit my target.

Go on a hunger strike (Pick any issue, it does not matter), and in three months you will be rail thin!:mad-new:

I use that app too for logging my food (or did before my mum was taken ill) I lost most of my weight while following that program. My trainer is a big "dont do too much cardio" person he likes weight work to retain muscle as its the muscles what keeps the metabolism going and helps you lose weight (apparently)
