The model looks so angry and unappealing. I've seen this before in other fashion shoots, and I have to say that I just do not get it.

I must say that I very much enjoy the sight of an attractive, appealing woman, but not this. She looks angry and mean and bitchy, as if to say, “Don't you dare look at me! Don't you dare even think of taking my picture! I hate you!

Images like this come across to me as the work of someone who deeply, intensely hates women, and is trying to show the rest of the world what it is that he see so hateful in them.

How did such intense ugliness come to be fashionable? Surely, Ms. Szoka is a beautiful woman, and would so appear if properly photographed; but certainly not here.

Wow pretty harsh^^^...I agree that a couple of the expressions I am not fond of..But the lighting, composition, and fashion is what I am impressed with...This is not the Photographers fault...

With respect I think you need to cut some slack. These are just voluntary photos, not socio-cultural mysogynistic statements made with some random female captive. I assume the model was an active and willing participant in creating a showcase for the fashion she is showcasing.

Technically, it is.

When the guy has a blog in his name, puts his name in the title of a post, headlines with his name, adds his name to the copyright of every photo (in an article that already features his name 20 times), requests all linkbacks be credited in his name, and credits himself as the photographer and "photography direction"...yes, the buck stops here.

Not really his fault in particular, mostly the result of an overzealous and inept PR team (who is responsible for the posts on this forum too by the way). Guys, if you're reading this: seriously, pick up a book on SEO. You're doing it wrong.

I suppose I ought to clarify that I am not really singling out this particular photographer or this particular model for this criticism; but this style in general. To me, it's just ugly, and it flies in the very face of what I imagine fashion photography should be about. Women are supposed to be beautiful, and fashion is supposed to enhance their beauty.

I just do not get the idea, as embodied in this shoot as in so many others I've seen, of presenting women in an aggressively ugly hateful, unappealing manner, and calling it “fashion”. I just do not get it at all. And I cannot help but think that such a style has to be driven by some deep hatred of women. Who would ever try to depict someone that way who did not hate the subject of that depiction?

I agree with you. Technically the photo is very good but I certainly would not want to meet this model in a dark alley. She is scary. I really does not make me want to buy this fashion or look at the blog.

Will the real @Benjamin Kanarek please stand up? He could answer those questions, though I doubt we'll see another post until the PR team posts about another photo shoot, which seems to be the trend.

Maybe pouty lips/duck face is on the outs and angry face is the hot new thing with models? High fashion is in a league all its own. I agree that the photography is great, though blown out in a couple spots, but the posing seems out of place.

I love the different moods portrayed. Good range of acting/poses, you can tell she's loosening up for the shoot. A real pro.

My wife has the theory that many fashion designers are at least a bit light in the loafers, that many of them outright hate women, and that this is what explains a lot about the way that women's fashion ends up being designed and portrayed.

Perhaps…But a lot more wish they were. It really depends on which ones.

Best you watch the video. Marlena was play acting and having fun. She showed a panoply of expressions. We have worked on several occasion thus her feeling totally at ease in what she wanted to say via her own actions. By the way, as a father of three daughters all of whom I love profoundly, all I can say is "me thinks thou protesteth too much" ;)
