A crazy but true story!

As some of you know, my wife and I have a female boxer who is very much a part of our family. In fact, my wife really likes boxers so much that she is involved with the Boxer Rescue here in San Diego and has made some very close friends there. One of her friends, we'll call her "R" told my wife an amazing story.

So a little background on "R". She and her husband both agreed to a divorce nearly a year ago but she is only now starting to tell her friends and family. She's a very private person so it's not really unexpected that she would keep this to herself as long as she did. But now that she's told people about the divorce, she can also tell her story.

"R" has 2 permanent boxers and fosters two more dogs as needed. She's very attentive to her 2 boxers and takes them to the same groomer every 4 months to have their dew claws clipped. While she was sitting in the waiting room while dog 1 (we'll call him "G") was getting his claws clipped the groomer came out with a very serious look on her face and asked R if everything was alright. R looked at her funny and said "yes, everything is alright". She then looked at the groomer and asked why, did she not look alright or? The groomer replied no, it's not that at all. I was just wondering if you were alright because G kept telling me that he was not sad about the separation because he knows you're happier now. R nearly fell on the floor because at this point she had honestly told NO ONE, not her mom or sisters or anyone.

Stories like this always blow me away and as a scientist I can only conclude that it was 1) a very unusual coincidence or 2) a lucky guess or 3) that some people really can get "vibes" from other species and the dog did indeed communicate his feelings to her. Now the first two hypotheses seem unlikely but possible, however the 3rd hypothesis seems crazy but does fit the facts. Either way, it's a crazy but true story

I think the more time someone spends around animals the more they learn to recognize behavior patterns, so I suspect the groomer has seen more than their share of dogs living in homes that are experiencing divorce and has learned to spot the behavior changes in the animals. After 16 years with one cat it became almost second nature to know what his body language meant and what he wanted you to do, or not do.

First off, kudos for the animal rescue work :)

I firmly believe our dogs react to 'people' stress. I'm not suprised by this story
