People and their way to trash nature

Sorry but I am so angry, not with you of course, but the mentality in people living in this world!

Yesterday I spend several hours with a damn (but very, very cute) seagull which was stuck with a fishing line, the hook in its mouth! Couldn't see where and really didn't want to. I got it out of the water, the poor bird and the line where stuck in all kind of stuff, and with a shirt wrapped around it, I managed to bring this and my 2 dogs (whom I was walking) to a location where a guy from a animal protection came and picked it up.

I'll spare you for the long story, but anyhow, couldn't sleep last night because I couldn't get this image of this poor bird out of my head, and today I am just ANGRY. How in the world could anyone leave 2 hooks AND 10 meter of fishing line for every wild life to get stuck in??
Of course I went back and got it all out of the water and into a dumpster, where it should have been placed in the first place.

Think I'll have to call the animal protection center again, to hear if they managed to save the bird. It was a very pretty seagull. I really feel bad for this bird :blue:

i took a shot of a duck last week and it had a load of line behind it, now i didnt know until i got home and seen it on my PC, probably find (my guess) is that the line snapped and somehow ended up with the seagull, he maybe ate the bait on the hook/or fish??? cant really see someone fishing for a seagull, but then......there are some sad people about. Good news is you helped him out and i hope he makes it.

I saw, in Croatia, a private video shot by a mother with her phone, where…

A typical Adriatic day where the smell and ambiance of holidays are every where.
A father was standing by a marina, holding his 1.5 - 2 years old baby, looking at
the boats and at the time passing by.
He held some food in his other hand as one of these seagull came very close in an
attempt to steal something… at the same moment, the baby stretch his/her hand
toward the goodie and the bird, as to protect its lunch, picked just once at the baby's
eye and pulled on the lid…

I don't want to go in the every details of it but…

Horror stories are happening every where! Such misery, your story or the video, is
unacceptable but unavoidable. Life is a dangerous journey!

No, it was stuck in a small stream and I found hmmm, I really dont know the english words (nor fishing equipment names), well it was attached to these 2 things you roll the line around. I am pretty sure someone been fishing at this spot. Perfect quiet place to sit.

While I understand and share your anger, we aren't really sure the hooks and line were disposed of as garbage in such a way this could happen. Perhaps the line was cut somehow in the water while fishing and the gull picked it up in the water or some other means? Things aren't always as they may seem.

People do suck sometimes, no doubt. Some people are so careless and don't seem to care one bit about where they toss trash. It's been a problem through the ages :(

I think what your describing is a spools or hand line spools. I'm not sure what fishermen use where you are, but hand lines are rarely used here unless someone was desperate for food or trying to snag a salmon in a off limits area. But like others have said things can be hard to know without seeing who did it, how they did it, and finding out why.I hope the seagull pulls through.

The good fishermen take every care to try to avoid mishaps, there hook is on a weaker piece of line so if it snags and the line breaks it breaks on the short 12-15 inch end piece, there used hooks and line are taken home, the hooks themselves have no barbs on.
All these things though do not exclude the possibility of an accident and like you i have done my fair share of rescues and cleaning up after thoughtless anglers,i dont fish now but have the gear and for some reason often include it in my list of hobbies.
Although its upsetting to see, these incidents are fortunately rare when you consider the amount of fishing that goes on,it would be nice if they never happened.

Kudos to you, wud, for taking the initiative and being responsible for the seagull's health and safety. Perhaps it was not an intentional act by the person who left the gear there, but sadly there are many cases of animal abuse whether intentional or not. It's nice to know you are a person with stellar character. Thank you.

I too hope the seagull will be okay. About an hour away, we have a place that specifically deals with injured wildlife. It would be nice if there were more places devoted to their care. Please let us know if you hear anything about the seagull.

Though I use barbed hooks I do agree in general with my friend Mike. I try not to leave anything behind (of any kind). :)

I've been angry for a very long time cos this is how we treat every other living creature in this planet.
Either for pleasure or by accident, we are slowly but surely destroying everything beautiful.

And you can not blame the 'who' that did that, cos that is who we are.
As a species, we tend to take everything for granted and really do not care what the result will be tomorrow as long as we can go past today.

Think of parasites, eat the host body from within till nothing remains.
we are walking talking intelligent parasites that care a damn about anything but ourselves.
this will be the situation till we are on top of the food chain..
if and when a more powerful species emerges that does the same to us that we doing to the rest, we will possibly understand..
and feel sorry for what we did.. but hell, we'll deserve it

Im not at all angry with people fishing, most who do this knows how to clean up, kill the fish fast and all this. I am just so UGGGHH with people leaving stuff which we all know (yes, we know!) some animal are going to get stuck on and die slowly and in pain.

Same with people throwing out cans in the side of the road, then a big lawn mower comes by and the cans are split into thousands of pieces, just waiting for an animal to get cut on it.

Not saying I am a saint, am human too (you are right, White Light), but this was just plain idiotic. I am sure it wasn't by accident. Place was just to perfect a spot and the line was stuck to 2 different ends - one of wood, one of some styrofoam-ish, think you stick your hook there when not fishing. And the line was not even rolled out on one end, except the part which was in the water.

Well, called the animal hospital and they couldn't find out what happened to the seagull, so its properly been put down. Dont know why they should use time and money on a tiny bird, somehow I just really hoped they would.

Seriously, sometimes I think it would be good to learn how to put an animal down, only for emergencies of course!, but not sure I could do it. Oh and we cant go around with a gun here, so no "easy" way to it. Meaning, I think it would be easier shooting an animal than doing it by hand or with a stone.

To be honest, I've lost a ton of line and some hooks before due to it simply snapping, or a fish with teeth getting it, etc... It's unavoidable. I imagine sometimes it ends up back on shore and can do exactly this. Hard to prevent, without outright banning all fishing.

I'm glad you helped it though. I would've done the same.

All is not always as it seems. I fish often from my boat and the beach. I use what we call yabbies here in OZ. I can't count how many times I have cast out only to have a seagull come from nowhere and grab my bait. On several occasions the hook has been caught in birds mouth. Not a damm thing I can do about it. It usually ends with me cutting the line, otherwise I have a bird flying around on the end of my line. Only way I can avoid this, don't fish :(

To the OP. When it is time for you to check in at the "Pearly Gates". Don't be surprised to see the gull you saved sitting close by, ready to to give you a thumbs up to the judgement man.

Sadly, things like this represent just the tip of the iceberg. Below the water are hundreds to thousands of abandoned fish netting that continue to trap and kill their intended prey day in and day out. Add to this the ubiquitous plastic grocery bags that when dumped into the ocean look very much like delicious jelly fish, sea turtles favorite food. And you need watch "Deadliest Catch" to see how often a crab pot is lost to get an idea of how many of these pots lie on the bottom of the ocean trapping the creatures who are attracted by the dying of the creatures who were caught after being attracted by the dying of the creatures who were caught....

I believe there is more than enough evidence to declare that we have now entered a new epoch that has been tentatively referred to as the "Anthropocene" thus acknowledging the ongoing mass extinction taking place at the very moment. Turns out this extinction event, the 6th in the line of 5 previous mass extinction, mark the end of one epoch and the beginning of another. In the last great mass extinction that made us humans the big winners makes you wonder who, or what, will be the big winners from this current mass extinction.

Btw, has anyone read Kurt Vonnegut's "Galapagos - A Novel" ?
