Firstly a big hello to all.

To introduce myself I am a married 58yr old retired Firefighter from The UK, for years I have wanted to pursue my hobby of photography. To date I have done little my job kept me busy until I retired, my parents are unwell and need care a lot of the time. I have enrolled on a online photography course but to be honest I find it very repititive in the way the modules are laid out, I will try to keep it going. does anybody have thoughts about these types of course?

I currently have a Nikon D5200, Nikkor 18-140mm, Nikkor 50mm, Tamaron 17-50mm. Nikon SB700

I have all this kit but not really using it, so I need to start, my new year resolution lol

I have joined Nikonites because it seems a friendly community with a wealth of experience and information, I hope in the future to learn as much as I can from using this site, advice from members etc.

Regards
Bob

Howdy Bob and welcome to Nikonites!

I don't have any experience with the online photography classes (yet), but from the equipment you listed it looks like you should be off to a good start. I'm not as familiar with the Tamron as I am your other lenses.

What kind of photography are you interested in?

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the welcome.
You mentioned my equipment but to be honest for a while it has been stored away which is silly really, I have purchased it over time but the usage has been seldom.
I mentioned about the online photography course I think the main disadvantage is isolation, nobody to bounce thoughts, ideas off etc lots of dropdown boxes which are annoying at times.

As for what kind of photography? well I have limited experience of Landscapes which I enjoy, but I would like to get involved with my County Fire and Rescue service assuming they would allow me( 32yrs of service should count for something lol) It's what I know so being in the right place would potentially be a little less of a problem. I think at this point I am open to all aspects of photography, trying to see what fits.

I have also considered local camera clubs but they seem to have experienced photographers and having me snapping at their heels perhaps not the best idea lol.

Don't worry about not being surrounded by a mass of fellow photographers, not all of us are. Most of my learning and shooting is done alone. I've never done photography courses, but unless they teach the stuff that gives you that buzz, i guess it can get quite tedious. Photography clubs are something else I've not done, tho i did get invited to one. I don't really know what goes on there, but i guess exchanging ideas and technique must be part of it. It'd be tragic if they didn't want to aid someone willing to learn, and not worth going again if that's the welcome you received. Welcome along..

A big thanks for taking the time to reply,
I have taken onboard what you have said. I have been in Auto mode with my present and past Cameras, my photos have been ok but they are still basically snaps, so it's time to change.
