indoor low light lens suggestion

I am just checking to see what people suggest for an indoor lens. My wife had rented a 24-70 for a wedding she did. It started to rain at the last minute and got moved indoors. The hall was not well lit and even with the flash the pictures were alittle dark. They could be fixed with photoshop but we are curious what lens people suggest to use in the low light indoors for this. I am not looking for a top of the line but a good average priced lens.
Thanks in advance

The lens she rented is one of the preferred lens's photographers use. Along with the 70-200 and maybe a wide angle. But having a lens with a constant aperture of 2.8 is preferred.
The dark images your wife took just could have been the settings she used. But also keep in mind that even with a 2.8 lens, your still going to have to bump up the ISO. Depending on which camera you have a limit as far as how high you can set it and still get decent images. You here arguments on if shooting a wedding you need a pro camera body. This is one of the reasons why. Very good low light performance. So it's not just the lens, it's the whole combination.

I shoot a lot of indoor events with the 24-70, using an SB-800. I shoot in manual mode and usually shoot the flash in manual as well. I rarely have a problem unless I try to do more than my equipment can handle. You have to know the relationship between shutter speed and ambient light vs aperture and flash. And, factor in ISO. Trying to do this on the fly as a first-time can be a bit dicey. Faced with a situation like that, I might try shooting in Auto or Program with TTL. Giving up creative control to get keepers is usually an OK trade off.
