Portrait at Night

So I will be photographing a couple at night and the only thing I have is the SB800. My question is, what is the technique to photographing at night outside? Normally, I bounce light off a ceiling so that the flash isn't harsh, but you can't really do that outside. I won't have any softbox stands to set up either.

Well it depends. Is the background something you want in the scene. Like a sunset or city skyline? If so then expose for that and use the flash to expose them. So it's two exposures. One,by dragging the shutter you get the backgrounds and the flash will capture them. Seeing you have only one flash. You may want to consider a reflector to multiply your light source.
