What is the technique of blending many small pictures or parts together to make up a much larger image?

Does anyone have experience with doing this? What tools are needed to create this?

A camera, lens, and the right software.

My daughter just walked by and told me it's called a photomosaic. Now I'm looking for software to do this, because my daughter doesn't know what software to use.

Well, I tried several and am most pleased with Mazaika, so that's the one I've purchased a registration for and am using on my iMac.

And as far as Mazaika is concerned, my customer service experience was fantastic. I showed my true colors and ordered the PC version registration, and when I realized my error, I e-mailed them and they immediately took care of my order, e-mailing the proper links and log-in information to complete my registration for the iMac. All of this after 7PM on a Friday evening!!
