Hi all, I am new to the site, and am looking for help, I have a D3000 and would like to use it as to make a secondary income. I am quite adept but have had no formal training and would like to know if there are any websites one could use to access information on how to get the best out of ones camera. I am looking for tips that aren't too technical. any and all help/assistance/tips are appreciated. I have also tried uploading pics here but keep getting "file is to big" error. Thanks!!!

Keep in mind that yes knowing your gear is absolutely essential. But more importantly having an eye to take images. Anyone can take photos but it takes talent and a good eye to get past the snapshot p/s images. A really good photographer can use his cell phone and take incredible shots. They may not be tack sharp but I'd rather capture the moment and come back with a soft image than have 50 sharp images of nothing.

Thanks for all the responses!! I would like to think I have a good eye, most of my photography to date has been for formal functions within my family, and to date no-one has ever been unhappy. Then again maybe the no charge, unlimited prints and unlimited photos are part of that. However everyone has been telling me to take this further as they like what they see, and I get comments like, you should really start charging for what you do. My quandary however is that A) Photographers here(SA) are extremely pricey, B) I really don't know what to charge-as hubby says "you always sell yourself short." C) I am comfortable with my camera, but not with all the various functions so I would like to learn more. But yeah doing it for a business for now still seems a bit far fetched - I am a slight perfectionist!

One of the best ways, and many on here will agree, is to do a Project 365 (a photo everyday). Then get out there and shoot everything imaginable whether you have an interest or not. For example, shoot sports, shoot macro, shoot scenery, portraits in all light conditions. Whether you have an interest in a particular kind of photography or not, each type of photography has a valuable lesson that you never know when might come into play.

I wish you the best, now throw some pictures up so we can get to know you as a photographer.
