Laura...(just a thought here)...if at all possible....take this outside and place on a picnic table or something so it's on its own, without the distractions of curtains, lamps, etc. I think it would make a more interesting shot. What do you think? Worth trying? :)

Yes, that is a thought. I was originally attracted to this scene because of all the different shapes, angles and colors in one place. It seemed to strike a mood rather than showcase the sand art. It was a quiet morning corner of the room with the antique lamp and plant. It would be like taking a photo of a bowl of fruit along side a vase versus a photo of the apple on it's own. The sand art is nice but not conveying a mood when alone. I may experiment with this. Thanks for the suggestion Jack. :)

Well, I wasn't just the sand art I was looking at, Laura....it was the whole piece that it was encased in. I thought it would make an interesting subject on its own...sort of an architectural art work. :) Anyway...it was just a thought. :)

Still life is all about balancing shapes and negative spaces in the pictorial space. Next in importance is texture and tone. You must have balance though or it just doesn't work right.

I don't follow conventional rules as they lack inspiration and artistic expression. But you can do whatever you want.

Oh I agree with you that rules are made to be broken but to say that because one follows the rules they lack inspiration and artistic expression is not true IMO.

Your snap above is fairly well balanced according to the classic rules of still life. :)

Oh drat!

Classic rules!

I can never go home again........ :dejection:

See the way he walks down the street
Watch the way he shuffles his feet
My, he holds his head up high
When he goes walking by
He's my guy

When he holds my hand, I'm so proud
'Cause he's not just one of the crowd
Why is he always the one
To try the things they've never done?
And just because of that, they say:
[ Lyrics fro
"He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should"
But just because he doesn't do what everybody else does,
That's no reason why I can't give him all my love
He's always good to me,
Always treats me tenderly
'Cause he's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no, to me

If they don't like him that way,
They won't like me, I'm sure, today
And I'll be standing right by his side when they say:

"He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should"
But just because he doesn't do what everybody else does,
That's no reason why we can't share love
He's always good to me
Good to him, I try to be
'Cause he's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no, to me
Oh! (he's not a rebel, no no no)

He's not a rebel, no no no

Ted, I like your photos better than the poetry. That aside, I have to agree that your shot is very balanced in my opinion.

Poetry? I can only wish I wrote those lyrics. You're probably too young to remember the Crystals, but they sang that #1 hit... He's a Rebel. It was written by Gene Pitney. The song had motorcycle sounds.... awww, never mind.

This was shot for a wine retailer who asked if I could produce a sample image for their wine website. That was the brief. Send us some photos of wine. No indication of whether it was supposed to be for a product description, advert, website, leaflet, catalogue or what. They didn't go for it. Oh well, can't win them all, eh?!
