At the allotment

I stopped at one of the local allotments on the way home today, had the D810 & 28-300 with me so thought I would grab shots of some of the flowers that were the results of all the hard work put in by the owners.

It was overcast and reasonably bright so perfect to capture the images, here are some of the images taken.

Very nice photos. I did have to look up the term "local allotment" I think I understand it but for those of us "across the pond" could you give us a brief explanation of what it is? This will be my fact of the day that I need to learn.

I have to say the onions in the green house tube is a fabulous shiot. I like the rest but that one is awesome.
Don Kuykendall I think an alotment in the UK is where councils grant citizens small patches of land (within a bigger area) in which to grow produce and not only become self sufficient but also make a feww pennies by selling the goods. We've had programs on TV here and it is quite amazing what they can do with preciously fallow and derelict land.

But I may be wrong ... in which case that taught you nothing (kinda like being at school - oops sorry Gloria) ;)

a small plot of land rented from the local council / city authorities on which the renter grows vegetables and/or flowers

In the inner cities here some places have takes vacant lots and allowed the neighbors to grow vegetables like that. It is usually arranged by a neighborhood organization with them overseeing the use. The cities allow it for free since it gets the lots cleaned out and looking much nicer. Tomatoes and peppers are much prettier than weeks and old tires.

Thank you all for the comments.

An allotment is an area of open land normally owned by the council, they divide it into plots that citizens can then rent out for a nominal fee.

The idea is to allow those who rent to grow food / flowers and erect a small shed to keep their tools in - alas, many are now being sold as building land so not as prevalent as a number of years ago.

This area has about 30 plots on it growing a mixture of vegetables and flowers so I wanted to photograph some of the beautiful flowers.

I am a sunflower fan, therefore it's my favorite. You know the raspberry shot (those are raspberry, aren't those) is awesome too.

Thanks Michael,

It was a case of right place, right time as the weather was perfect and the flowers in bloom.

I liked the raspberry photo as it shows them in various stages of maturity and the colour contrast.
