Has anyone visited these spots in South Dakota? I'm thinking of going in August and was looking for anyone's experiences/advice/shooting spots. We need a travel section :).

I have. The Badlands is a fantastic place. Unfortunately I have visited when I was not into photography. I would love to go back now. You won't be disappointed.

Both are good photo opportunities. The Badlands hot like ****, you know what I mean. Don't forget Wall Drugs nearby. Rushmore can be hit or miss depending on time of day and other weather oddities. In that area you could be in clear blue and suddenly a hail storm only to be back to clear blue in a moments time. Rode up to Rushmore on a terribly overcast, foggy and soggy day because a kind resident called up to get conditions. Trusted their word and what do ya know? Just before getting to Rushmore elevation we came out of the clouds and it was clear blue.

Since you will be in that area, I highly suggest getting over to Spearfish canyon. Take it from Spearfish to Deadwood or reverse doesn't matter but it is awesome. Early or late will give you some great photo opportunities. If at all possible give driving duties to someone who doesn't care about natural beauty, you will be rubber necking.
