Project 365 - 2011

With a new year rapidly approaching, I was just curious as to how many of you will be embarking on a Project 365 adventure in 2011?

For those who don't know what this is, it's where you make a commitment to take a photo each and every single day for an entire year. If it sounds like a daunting task, that's because it is. I know many who have attempted it, but only a few who have actually succeeded. The logic behind taking on a huge goal like this is to hone and improve your skills. If you're really dedicated, you can not only share by uploading your daily photo, but also write a blog post about it.

They say there is support in numbers, so I figured I would be the first here to announce that I am making this one of my goals for 2011. There are many Project 365 support groups out there in the social media virtual world: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, to name a few.

Who's with me?

A book of images was published this year by a British Photographer who did just that, 365 images in a year from various places throughout the world.

I just might give this project a try. If I fail by even one day, at least I can say I gave it a shot. :) But I'll really try to go the whole 365 days. :)

The 365 Project intrigues me. As I am at the mercy of others when it comes to travel, my Project would quickly degenerate into mundane chaos.
On the other hand, I think it would be fun to see just how many different interesting viewpoints can be gotten from a box of Cheerios.

I'm in. Just remember...

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. YOU JUST MAY GET IT.

I salute you for embarking on the 365 project. It needs a lot of creativity and commitment on your part.
So far, the best 365 project I have seen is one from a fellow Nikon user named Dustin Diaz
Here is his photostream on Flickr: Project 365 - a set on Flickr

I'm sitting here thinking of my travel schedule, new job, and other reasons why I can't instead of why I can! I purchased a new camera bag so that I can bring my D300 with me on trips, so why not? I'm in!

(BTW If you are looking for a nice combo camera/small laptop bag, check out the Tamrac 5535 Adventure Messenger 5. It fits either my 13" MacBook or 12" ThinkPad x201, D300 with the Nikon 17-55, Nikon 70-300VR, Sigma 10-20, Nikon 50/1.4, Nikon 35/1.8 and SB-400 and fits under the seat on a plane.)

I think it's interesting that several of us think we need to travel to accomplish this. It's going to be challenging because it's going to make us have to look at our own backyard sometimes with new eyes.

Here's how I plan to approach the project. I'm making a list of possible subjects to photograph so I don't have to wrack my brain when I get up in the morning--I think it's easy enough to come up with at least 10. When I pick the project, I write it on the calendar. After I shoot and review the photos, I'll pick the best and next to best, place the best in an A-file, second-best in B-file, and the rest in my 365 day folder. If I'm happy with the results, I cross the subject off the list, or I modify it and add it to the list. e.g. if my subject is "my horses galloping in the field", and I get the shot I like, I may modify it to "my horses galloping through the snow" (and wait for snow). If I cross it off the list, I add another in its place so I always have a pool to pick from.

For me the list is going to be critical because I can easily procrastinate. I think if I pretend that this is a list of assignments from National Geographic, I'll have more get up and go. Then I can wait for my "pretend money" to come in.

Best Regards

Helene: I love your list idea! I'm going to have to ponder that a bit. Your travel observation was good. In my situation, I'm worried that work travel will get in the way! Different perspectives.

This project will most definitely be what you make of it. I can tell you that from experience, having failed at it last year. Half-hearted attempts will be met with half-hearted results. The ultimate goal here is to simply take better photos through constant shooting...the rest is up to you. 1 keeper photo per day, for 365 straight days.

It's not upload last year's photos because you felt like being lazy today. It's not take 20 shots today and save the others because you felt like being lazy for the next 19 days. You're only cheating yourself if you do stuff like that.

You can pick a single subject if you want. Flowers for example. Even when out of season, they are cheap to purchase at the store, and last for days. Take 365 shots of flowers in different light, from new angles, using different techniques...whatever you want. You can travel the world. You can find mundane objects around the house. There are no "rules" per se, for this challenge.

I would, however, suggest taking at least 10 shots each day and pick the best one. If you limit yourself to a single shutter press each day, you're not going to stick with this. Take your camera with you EVERYWHERE if you have to. Set aside an hour each day if you have to. Do this each day before bedtime if that's what works for you.

Well, that could get cluttered in a hurry. I was thinking we could all just create a new thread, something like:

Project 365: Username. Or possibly create a new folder in our member galleries to upload the photos. I'll probably be porting mine to flickr as well.
