I think Nikon World, at least from what I have taken away from it, is not an especially good resource for people just starting out in photography. It is oriented toward people with more of a background. There are no shortage of books about learning about photography available to you. Go to any Books A Million or other similar bookstore and look in the photography isle.

My personal choice would be a book on photography. A lot of the magazines I see are either too elementary or for such a niche market that they don't really help that much. Even so, I just can't keep from buying one or two every month. I might recommend N-Photo out of the UK, and available at some newsstands. I also know someone who can't stand it, and won't bother to borrow mine.

Some publishers produce "how to" compendiums that present a lot of good information. Though they can be very pricey for their magazine type format (often $30 or more), I believe that they are a better value than monthly magazines.

You might check your local library for new and back issues of the most popular photography magazines. You can also look into "free" intro subscriptions to some pubs that are available online for tablets or computers.

Good luck!

Long before there was ever an internet, or even a computer which was not the size of a small house, there were two magazines; Popular Photography and Modern Photography. I got both each month. They were how I learned to do darkroom photography and learned a lot of the rudiments of photography. I believe Popular Photography eventually gobbled up Modern Photography (which I always thought was a much better magazine) and it is still around.

Popular Photography has some pretty pictures, occasionally an interesting camera review, and about every other month it will have an article that is worth reading. My wife got me a subscription as a surprise. It is a very quick read every month. I have gotten a couple of interesting ideas and skills from it. I would not resubscribe though.

I have picked up one occasionally at Books A Million and came to the very same conclusions. It is pretty useless, at least for someone at my level, compared to what it was back in the '70's. But I always thought Modern Photography was far better written and when it came to reviews, far more extensive and objective. There was also Peterson's Photgraphic, which I found to be pretty worthless even back then. I don't know if it is even still around, I have not seen it in quite a while.

They did have a pretty good review of the D7100 this month. That was it though. I am a magazine junky though. I get quite a few. My favorite though is Wired.

Also check the "bargain" aisles and sections in the big book retailers. Check used bookstores and online, as well.

Some of the best books focus on lighting.

Another way to learn is to take a class on beginning photography if you can. Many community colleges have photography classes, either for credit or for adult education.
