What lens to look for next?

I really need something in between the lenses I have now in the wide end. I have a 14 2.8 and love it. Really a good lens. Then I have my 24-120 and it is a great walk around lens but I really would like something in a zoom between the 14 and 24 and going up to 50 or so. Just not sure what is out there. Really would like a f2.8 also. Don't want to spend a fortune but I want a decent lens.

Any ideas on what to look for?

This one looks interesting. About the range I would like

Would you go with an f1.8 or f1.4? i'm looking at the 20mm Nikon and the 20mm Sigma Art lenses. In addition to those, I'm looking at the Nikon 15mm since it is a rectilinear lens, not a fisheye. I'm assuming that the 15mm isn't what you'd be interested in since it is so close to the 14 mm you already have.

Unless you want an F/4 Nikon has the 16-35 for a Grand, then there is the new Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 for almost twice the price of the Toker.
I think if you really want an f/2.8 the Tokina is the way to go. You already know about's built quality and the IQ, so for a little over 600 bucks I would get it if I need it one.

Why don't you just save your nikonites.com moderator pay and buy a Nikon AF-S 14-24 f/2.8 then? ;)

But seriously, I haven't really paid attention to zooms in this focal length range for a long time, if at all, and there doesn't seem to be much out there in what I would term as a "budget" lens.

Are you just looking at new lenses, or would you buy used?

Don, are you specifically looking for FX for your D750 or DX? That will make a difference in price.

There aren't a lot of options especially when it comes to being a decent lens optically. The Sigma wide angle zoom for FX isn't fast, and I've read a myriad of reviews from good to not-so-good. Tamron's wide zoom looks decent but is higher in cost than your budget. The Tokina you mentioned looks like it will fit the bill but has some weight to it (over 2 pounds). These are the main lenses I've read about.

I have the Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G zoom. It doesn't have VR and isn't totally weather sealed, but it takes amazing images and is light weight. It also accepts front filters. There is a 'D' version of this lens which you'd want to avoid. Sorry I can't be of more help.

The Sigma 12-24 version II is very good. As others have said, not as fast as the Nikon but I never found it to be an issue.

You seem to be overthinking this. 700 bucks will get you a 17-55 f/2.8 on ebay.

Don, are you specifically looking for FX for your D750 or DX? That will make a difference in price.

Putting a DX lens on the D750 is just crippling the camera so all my DX lenses stay in my wife's backpack with her D7100. I thought about selling the Tokina 11=16 and she would not let me.

I can sell my Rokinon 14mm and scrape together a few bucks and get the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Lens The reviews I have seen are pretty good. Amazon has it new for $576.93

Anyone need a 14mm?

The Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon will be delivered on Thursday. Got to love Amazon prime.
Now who want to buy the Rokinon 14mm? It is a great lens but I needed more range.

So what it will work fine on your dx and you'll just lose a little bit on the FF?

My D750 is full frame. My D7100 is DX and I have the Tokina 11-16 for it.

You actually lose a lot using a DX lens on a FX camera. You end up having to shoot in DX mode and it is no longer the wide angle you bought. Even if you try and shoot it in full frame mode you end up cropping a lot so again you don't have what you need. I have tried and the results are not good.

You are really crippling a FX camera by putting a DX lens on it.

Agreed. Been there, done that... The idea sounds good on paper but generally speaking? No. Just... No.

FX glass for FX bodies.

I think everyone who moves from DX to FX tries it. Most only try it once and then move on. I bought FX lenses before I bought the D750 with the exception of a side angle. The Rokinon 14mm is a sweet lens but 14mm is a little wide on occasions and 24mm is not wide enough. the 16 - 28 should really fill out my reach pretty good.

16-28
24-120
70-300
150-600

all bases covered between 16 and 600

the 16-28 is a 2.8 which is great because I need the wide angle for night photography and for my indoor architecture photos.

My first reactions was "what"? I want the widest I can get. I love the UWA view and always go for the widest possible. Your wide angle shots are great - can't wait to see how you use the new glass. Congrats!!

When I was shooting the Milky Way recently the 14mm was just to wide and was getting more sky than I wanted. The 24mm (24-120) looked a lot better but if was f4. 20mm or so would have been perfect. And no, I could not move in closer. LOL
