Tamron 2X teleconverter

I have a D 5000 with a Nikon DX 55mm to 200mm 1.4-5.6 G. Am I wasting my money buying. a 2X teleconverter. for it. Thanks Ken

Welcome to the forum Ken. I don't have experience of using teleconverters but I did have a 55-200mm Nikkor lens which I found to be not very sharp and not enough reach for wildlife. The problem with teleconverters from all I've read and heard is that they will degrade image quality and magnify any imperfections the lens has. So essentially they are only really useful on lenses that are sharp to begin with.
It will also make your lens (if it is compatible?) an f8-11 lens which will severely impact your ability to autofocus and will mean you will require quite a lot of light.

If I were you and I felt I needed more reach I'd be looking at getting a new lens rather than a teleconverter. If you are planning to stay with DX then I've seen very good results from other forum members using the Nikkor 55-300mm. A step up from that would either be the Nikkor 70-300mm VR lens or Tamron 70-300mm VC.

If you are wanting to shoot mostly wildlife (?) then you will mostly likely find that 300mm still isn't enough reach.

I hope this helps and the short answer is most likely a 2X teleconverter would be a waste of money.

Probably... that's not an F1.4-5.6... that's an F4-5.6... you'll lose 2 stops with that 2X converter... that means your lens will effectively become f8-11... it probably won't autofocus except in broad daylight on a Sunny 16 day...

Thanks for your informative replies, As you can probably tell from my equipment, I'm not a pro., But I do like taking quality pics. Looking to trade my lens for the 55 mm to 300 mm. Interesting to see how that goes. Ken
