I'm currently bidding on one of these on Ebay. Looks like it should be an ideal lens to get me the shallow depth of field I want on some shots - the standard 18-55mm lens that came in my camera kit doesn't go shallow enough? Seems a good lens for the price?

depends on your camera and what you are planning on doing with it. Personally, I feel that for certain situations it is not wide enough provided that you do not have enough room.

That 50mm will "feel" more like a 75mm on the crop sensored D3200. I like the 35mm FOV more on the APS-C bodies, but it really depends on what all composition you want in your images.

Have to agree, I've used the 50mm 1.8. And for me 35mm was a better focal length.

Take your 18-55 and set it on 50mm and don't touch it. Now go out and shoot for a few hours.

The new day that that 18-55 and set it on 35mm and go shoot.

This will let you see the difference. Personally for the DX the 35mm was my choice.

I got talked into buying a 50 1.8 when I first got my D3200 and I do use it some. I did this weekend, but I wish I had bought a 35. I would get more use out of it.

I'm still winning the bid on the 50mm 1.8 at the moment, ends tomorrow evening. If I win it, I'll stick with it, if I don't, I'll look for the 35mm

The 50mm is a good all around lens on a DX and is also good for portraits as well given the 1.5x crop factor mentioned above. You can't go wrong with a 35mm & 50mm 1.8G on these cameras, good luck with the listing.

I see 50mm & 35mm going for about $160 & 130 respectively on a few Nikon buy/sell groups on facebook. Check those out as well.

yeah, they're about the same price on ebay in the UK too. Lots of choice too, so I'll go with whichever one I am successful with first. I'm sure I'll be happy with either.

I see I'm behind in the read - I wish this forum would put you on the last page when you click the link at the top of the page...grrr...

I concur - the 35 1.8G would be a better option - I had one for a while and it was way better on my crop sensor body....and it seems you got one and are using it well... :D
