I'm glad Canon didn't succeed with the acquisition. I don't have any Sigma lenses, but competition is good for us.
Agreed! The idea of Canon acquiring Sigma simply doesn't bear thinking about... Kudos to Sigma.

Now come on with the 85mm f/1.4 Art lens you magnificent bastards!!!

If there weren't a Tamron 150-600mm lens, or the Sigma 150-600mm C and S lenses, I doubt very much Nikon would have gave us the 200-500mm VR . Even if they had, it would never have been at such a low price point.

I'm glad they did this. Sigma (and by extension the people who buy their lenses) would have suffered.

Yes, competition Spurs excellence. I would feel the same way if it had been Nikon wanting to buy them. There is always room for more competitors but less competitors limits our choices

Don't see how Canon even thought that Sigma would bite - they've been doing pretty well and pushing a few envelopes to boot. Their 20/1.4 is definitely going to give our 1.8 a run for its money once it comes out.

I bet they did it to undercut Tamron and Sigma sales more than serving their customers.
