I'm beginning to think that I need a macro lens so I would like some opinions please. Looking at my collection, where do you guys think I should fit it?

It depends what you want to do with the macro. For insects and such you want some working distance since bugs are easily scared and you don't want your shade in the shot. I personally would not go below 90-105mm for insects.

I have the Tamron 90mm and it is a great lens - good for portraits too as a bonus.
Also consider the Nikon 105mm which has good reviews

Love my new Tokina, I don't think you can possibly go wrong with it for the price! The optics are incredibly sharp and it takes great portraits too.

If your buying used take your camera with you to test out first

Good advice but I don't think buying used is likely regrettably. I'm at least 4 hours drive from the nearest big town where there is likely to be a lens for sale though I have never seen one there. I haven't seen much come up on Kijiji for sale in BC outside of Vancouver which is 8 hours away. I usually buy new from Camera Canada who seem to have the best pricing and good service plus no PST which cancels out the shipping costs. I like the look of the Tamron but the new price is too high for now so I guess I will have to wait.

I have been using a 60mm on DX sensor, so it is like 90mm. To get full frame coverage requires being so close that most bugs won't tolerate you. In the process of going another route at this time so have some numbers for you.

Tamron 60mm is 3.15" long with closet focus 4-3/4" from the lens - weight 14 oz
Tamron 90mm is 4.5" long with closest focus 6" from lens - weight 19-1/2 oz
Sigma 105mm is 5" long with closest focus 6-3/8" from lens - weight 25-1/2 oz
Sigma 150mm is 5.9" long with closest focus 8" from lens - weight 40-1/2 oz
Sigma 180mm is 8" long with closest focus 9-1/2" from lens - weight 58 oz
Tamron 180mm is 6-1/2" long with closest focus 11" from lens - weight 33-1/2 oz no OS or VR

These numbers are derived from stated specs. I believe to have gotten closer than what is stated above. From my limited experience, closer is more likely to have a departing target. Also when needing to get closer, by the time you get a focus, the target may not be in the frame due to moving or the photographer's missed aim. It is easy to miss when using the viewfinder.

Change your thinking, you do not need more lenses. Btw I`m trying to get rid of NAS.

Looking at your lenses:
Wide angle you should be OK with the 18 mm zooms you have. Unless you are really into wide angle fast lenses.
Standard you have that nifty fifty.
You have some reasonable telephoto capability there.

Try to do as much as you can with that 50, 300 and 600mm it should bring you far in Macro, if that is not sufficient ...
As you saw people recommended about every macro lens available (they forgot the newer Samyang, not very known yet). That is since they are all very good.

I have an older second hand Tamron myself and must admit I`m enjoying it. It is more needed on FX though, the rest does get you far on DX.
Since you do not have fast telephoto lenses that might be an opportunity to start that, be careful it is addictive.

Great information, thank you. For my purposes I believe the Tamron 90mm is the way to go

The Sigma 105 is a super lens, and a great value. IMHO, the extra cost and weight is worth it for the working distance.

I have a mint AF DG I'll be putting up on eBay next week as my new body lacks a focus motor. Let me know if you're interested.

Well, the new Sigma 105mm with OS does not extend when focused out. The references can be used or ignored.
@ScottinPollock It appears you have made mention of more than one item for sale in threads here. If you would like to offer sale items, there is a section for that. Please follow the rules of the forum in that regard.

With all due respect, I tried the panko link and got nowhere. I even tried going to the link regarding how to earn points and got nowhere. This was tried in chrome on mobile, and both safari and chrome on desktop.

I am happy to follow any rules involved in mentioning any items I have for sale, it would just be nice if they actually worked.

If you have working links to this info I would appreciate you pointing them out to me.

If you have issues with anything to do with the site make @jdeg aware as he is the site guru and can fix (or destroy) everything.

On a DX camera 70mm works very well. B&H has Sigma 70's for 449 new and thats one of the sharpest lenses ever made also the Tamron 180 is a great value at 729. don't let the no VR throw you really good Macro usually involves a tripod.
