I am a Nikon D7100 user and am looking for some longer glass. I have done a ton of research but was wondering if anyone had opinions on the Tamron 150-600mm and the older Nikon AF 80-400D lens. I shoot mostly wildlife (birds) and sports. Thanks for the advice.

The older 80-400mm does have some slow focus issues and having seen the Tamron shots on here IMHO it beats the old 80-400.
The new version of the 80-400mm with the TC 1.4 though can give the same reach and makes a big difference and again IMHO is a better choice. but thats IMHO

Depends on what you want to use it for.

After using both my IMO go for the tamron, the nikon is slow to focus even compared with the f6.3 150-600,the nikon i had was not as sharp as the tamron at 400mm and you still have 200mm to go with the tamron.
The latest 80-400 is a cracking lens but look at the price, especially if you add the converter.

I have the Nikkor af-d 80-400, and I'd say it wouldn't be very good for birds for a couple reasons! First it is slow, and second it doesn't zoom out enough for me to get much bird shots! But it is nicely built and a decent lens for slower moving shots! :)

I had the 80-400 old version and yes it is slow but I managed bird shots, racing shots etc but in saying that I now have the 150-600 and love it way more than the 80-400. Go for the 150-600 and you will not regret it.

Adding a 1.4TC would make it, at the long end, a 560mm f8 wide open. However its probably more like around 540mm f8, as its not a true 400mm, but more like a 385mm. Not that its a big difference.

As a newbie and someone who has just bought the Tamron 150-600 even though I have very little expirience in lenses, this lens its not too heavy (even for me) focuses very quick and it does produce great photos as you can see by the pics that the more expirenced guys have posted on here, just my little newbie opinion :) oh and I think the VR is helping me no end

Hi,

At this point, what I've read so far, I would go for the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.
It seems to be sharper as the Tammy and with the USB dock (accessoire), you can adjust much more.

Not disagreeing but i would wait on that until we see more real world samples of the sigma C,most images are from the sport model,i do have some large jpeg samples from the C and they look to lack contrast,i cant post any as they where put on another forum only for download and looking at.

The Sigma 150-500 is just on the point of going out of production so there are some good offers...and 3 year warrantee.
Only £489 with Simply electronics and sigma have to give it a 1 year warranatee in uk ..its grey .
Have had the newer sigma 80-400 and 120-400 and could not get a sharp pic out of either the 150-500 is great for the £549 I paid not grey. You must have your back focus spot on .
