I consider to get a SIGMA 17-50 2.8 for indoor and late afternoon shots as well as low light. I have got the Sigma 10-20m and it is a great lens. The Nikon 16-85mm I got is superb.

Few days back I was in a situation where the 16-85mm was to slow. Therefore I used the 35mm 1.8 which did a great job, but I needed just a bit more zoom cos some subject was not that close for get a good framed pic with th e35mm without cropping to death. I couldn't move there closer cos the fence stopped me doing this

Just saw this one Nikon AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED.

I see now that I have to do lots of reading and testing before I decide which one is the best for my needs

Michael, why not just get a 50 1.8, it's so cheap you don't even have to plan it too long in advance. It's the best bargain lens around. And since you now have the D7000 you can get the D version which is even cheaper to own.

Marcel I have the 35mm 1.8, the 40mm 2.8, and the 50 mm 1.8 already. Just the 50mm was not with me last time.

But maybe I should buy just a small bag were I can but my primes in and yes, that is something to think about.

If it were me, I'd sell off the 40mm and 50mm and put the money towards a Nikon 85mm f/1.8; an amazingly sharp lens and fast as your 35mm. If you need a zoom that's a different matter, of course. While I like a good zoom, I LOOOVE a good prime and the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G is a real gem.

Well, I can only say that Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 is a great general lens. It sits on my D7100 for most of the time. I find the range 17-50 ideal for most of my work and image quality is excellent. Apparently, Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is even better, though I never tried it.

When I was deciding about buying my general lens, I considered three Sigmas: 18-35 f/1.8, 17-50 f/2.8 and 17-70 f/2.8-4 C. After a lot of thinking I decided that the first one hasn't got enough reach and is too bulky and too heavy, while the third one wouldn't give me enough image quality. The 17-50 seemed like a good compromise.

I shot thousands of pictures with it and I'm happy :D

Sigmas: 18-35 f/1.8,

After long time thinking, I did in the last two days during shooting low light. D7000 and the Nikon 55-300 on a tripod http://nikonites.com/project-365-and-daily-photos/24114-photowalking-thailand.html#post330669 , I came up with the idea walking around my city. I get up almost every day at 04.00 am. So it is a great time. Street light still on, people coming home from parties or people going to work.

Sure I can carry tripods, but this is not the kind of gear capturing people on the move, dogs are coming from dates, vendors are getting prepared, etc..

I think a sigma 18-35 f/1.8 gives me just a great range of doing what I wanna do.

Yes, I am still searching for me what is my ability as a man who likes taking pics and show them to friends.

According to all reviews I have seen, Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is a terrific lens. Someone compared it to having a bag of primes. Just remember it is quite bulky and heavy, when you want to use it for photowalking.

I thought you needed more zoom than 35mm buddy? The 80-200mm f2,8 two ring lens seems like it might make a great alternative to the 70-200 that is so spendy! One day I will buy the 80-200mm myself for those shots that require a faster lens than my 80-400! :)

I will get one with more zoom as well. I am thinking of changing to some speedy lenses. The other lenses I got are going with the D5100

There is nothing perfect. One thing I do know is that larger heavier lenses are sometimes intimidating for people that you try to photograph. For me, I prefer to sacrifice a bit on speed in order to have less weight to carry around and to be a little bit less conspicuous. I have the Tamron 17-50 2.8 that I love on my D7000.

I have both the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and the Nikon 80-200mm f2.8
I use the Sigma 17-50mm on my D7000 and the 80-200mm on my D750.
The Sigma is a great lens. Sharp, fast and the OS is really good.

The 80-200mm is a fantastic lens but I'm starting to find the lack of VR an issue so I'll be buying(once funds allow) the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 DI VC USD lens to go with the 24-70mm f2.8 Tamron I ordered today

I think that I will get the Sigma 17-50 2.8. Last Saturday I had to shot lots of pics indoor, I used my Nikon 35 1.8 but it was a bit difficult get great shots of ppl (group)

I hope that the school holidays are over soon and I can go to buy my Sigma 17-50.

That looks like a good lens Michael. Good luck... These decisions are always tough.

Will you sell your 16-85 if you get the Sigma Michael ? I must admit I have been tempted to replace mine with a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 a few times, but I find it hard to part with the 16-85 because it delivers 99% of the time. I will be interested to hear your thoughts on how the two lenses compare, if you do get the Sigma.
