18-140 vs 18-55 vr 2

Hi all

I have a D3300 which I've been using for about a year now with the 18-55 VR2 and the 35mm f1.8. I used the 55-200 that came with the body every now and then for dog sports but purchased the Tamron SP 70-300 VC at the end of last year since I needed more than 200mm.

I like the 18-55VR2, I think its a great lens and its size/weight is perfect for the lightweight D3300. Same with the 35mm. The Tamron gets attached for specific shots/planned photos etc.
I'm not unhappy with the kit zoom lens at all.

Generally when I'm walking around, travelling, going away for a weekend I will attach a single lens to the camera which is either the 18-55 or the 35mm. If I'm at dog training or a dog trial, it would be the 70-300.
However there are times when the single lens doesn't always workout, you occasionally don't have the reach or with the 35mm you just cannot move your body to frame the photo just right etc.
As another example going down to the beach for sunset shots (beach is about 500m - 1km from my house). Here in Cape Town we have wind, a lot of wind and pretty much on a daily basis, especially in my area. Not the best conditions to be changing lenses.

I'm thinking of trading in my 55-200 and maybe getting the 18-140 as walk around lens for the above mentioned reasons. The lens only weighs about 30 grams more than my camera body so should balance nicely.

I believe some people reckon the 18-55VR2 might be sharper and have slightly better IQ than the 18-140, can anyone comment on that?

Would I notice any difference between the two? If not should I trade in the 18-55VR2 at the same time to drop down the cost of the 18-140 even further?

In hindsight perhaps I should gone for the more expensive option originally which included the 18-140 instead of the 2x lens combo since I eventually got the 70-300 anyway.

Thanks

I can't speak to the 18-55 but the kit 18-140 dx that came with my 7100 is a decent all around lens. I like the 18 part of it for walking around and shooting everything. I like to get close and one can do a fine job with it. Makes a decent video lens too. Ah that hindsight thing.......
