Has anyone got both these lenses - id like a macro / close up shot taken with both (preferably of the same object) to compare as Im not sure which one to go for as a general purpose lens. Id like something to take portraits and also some macro work.

I have got both. They are realty different. When I want to go really close-up I use my 40mm If I want just go close and i have my 50mm mounted I don't change to 40mm. But consider that the inbuilt flash is not that great for the 40mm when you very, very close to the subject.

The 50mm is faster than the 40mm. Indoors i like to use the 40mm cos it is a bit better in narrow space.

I love both lenses a lot. At night, when I go to the night market, I have both with me. In my Spirit of Thailand thread you can see lots of photos taken on holiday used 40mm only. Day and night shots. Also there are lots of photos taken with my 50mm as well.

Two thread I am running: http://nikonites.com/project-365-and-daily-photos/13553-40mm-close-ups.html#axzz2TPtmtNSv

Among other lenses, I have the 50mm f/1.8 and a 60mm macro lens. Not quite the question, but my observation is:

40mm, 50mm, and 60mm are all somewhat telephoto on DX. Indoors, shorter wide angle is popular.

Many zooms will substitute for a 50mm lens (many include 50mm field of view).

ISO will substitute for f/1.8 light gathering (today, not so true in film days).

A telephoto will substitute for background defocus of f/1.8. maybe better.

But nothing substitutes for a macro lens, to focus close on so many things.

Frankly, I rarely consider using my 50mm f/1.8.

thanks that confirms my thoughts, I have had a 40 micro before but wasnt overly impressed as a macro lens but OK for general use.
