Checking new lenses

When buying a new lens, should it be checked or tested in some way? If so, how do I test it?

Someone not sure if its sparky has a series of test shots that he takes with each lens he buys,hope fully who ever it is will pick this up.

Thanks. Can a lens be configured in some way? Perhaps the AF?

You can fine tune the AF if its needed

Thanks for your help, Mike.

I'll do test shots at various focal lengths and apertures to check sharpness. From there a brick wall to insure corners are equally sharp and the lens is not de centered. If i'm not happy i'll return or do more formal/controlled testing

I test for front/back focus and I test the accuracy of five individual focus-points: center AF point and one point in each corner.
