Cleaning lenses advice please

I have a couple of lenses coming which will be protected by Hoya HD filters. I also have a rocket blower on order. I used to also use some cleaner fluid & lens tissue.

I'm thinking that I need some sort of wet cleaner, for instance if I get rain spots on the filter glass. Assuming that a wet cleaner is most suited, which cleaners would be recommended?

I just use a rocket blower and the LensPen in assorted sizes. Large one for the front lens glass, a smaller one for the rear lens glass, and a tiny one for the viewfinder. Works wonders for me! Got mine at Best Buy...

Having said that, most of the "cleaning" I do is for the random fogging that occurs, and I just keep a clean microfiber lens wipe handy for that.

For general cleaning of fingerprints and dust and what not, I use a dry microfiber rag.

For something really nasty, like salt residue, I use a dab of denatured alcohol on the aforementioned microfiber rag.

Thanks for your replies.

I think I've found the cleaning kit, is this the correct one? Lenspen Elitepro Cleaning Kit for DSLR Camera: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo

I'm not sure how the lens pen works, but I'm happy to try it as it doesn't seem to use abrasion - apart from the brush.

I'm aware from my enthusiast car cleaning that the slightest particle on a cloth can damage paintwork. For this reason, I don't think I'd want to use any type of cloth on the lens itself.

I use Eclipse fluid for any stubborn smudges, it is methanol. Usually a clean lens cloth & blower are enough. I also have a couple of lens pens in assorted sizes.

The lens pen is great indeed. The micro-fiber you have to watch what you buy. I had some cheap that had quite the different interpretation of what a "dust cloth" should do.

That's similar to the kit I got, yup. Lenses only, obviously.

It's actually a carbon based cleaner in the tip that helps absorb oils, etc. without rampant abrasion. With the cap on, you give it a quarter twist to help keep the lenspen clean and the carbon "fresh".

Thanks for the info.

I was going to get come Eclipse cleaner & swabs in case the sensor needs a clean.

I was playing with my camera last night - as you do - & forgot that I didn't have the lens cap on. I lightly touched the front of my lens. Checking carefully, there are 3 finger prints visible (my Hoya HD protector lens hasn't arrived yet).

I have ordered a set of lens pens, will these do the trick?

Also, any hints & tips for how to use them?

I have found that ROR (residual oil remover) has been really helpful when needing to clean stubborn messes.

What ever method you use make sure to blow off any dust that may be on your lens. If there is a hard piece of sand type material it can & will scratch your lens.

Go careful & easy when cleaning. I'd use Eclipse fluid to remove finger prints.

Understood - I have a Rocket Blower on order too. Eclipse fluid with which product to apply the fluid?

Along with the Rocket blower & Pens Pen kit - which are on their way. I've just ordered some Eclipse fluid & some PecPads by the same manufacturer.

Once they've all arrived, I'll decide how to clean the lens.
