Are you looking for something in the same focal range with better image quality? {IQ}
It's going to be hard to beat unless you spend a lot of money.
If you want a Nikon lens, then the 17-55 2.8 for around a thousand.
Other manufactures lenses at the same focal range with a 2.8 maximum aperture will still run you over 500 dollars.
I hear that the new 18-55mm VRII lens is quite sharp and will not break the bank.
The 18-55mm VII lens is light & pretty sharp. Also an excellent walk-around lens for DX. If you want better quality, have you considered a prime lens? Perhaps the DX 35mm f1.8?
It's a bit of a guessing game for us unless you can give us an idea of the intended use?
If like me you have the old non VR 18-55 then I'd look at upgrading to the latest VRII version as it seems pretty highly rated. I'm happy enough with my older 18-55 and really like the close focusing it offers.
I've just picked a 35mm 1.8G lens as I wanted a sharp, fast prime that doesn't break the bank. I think this lens will help me to learn how to be a better photographer by getting me to move my feet and understanding how to compose shots better. Might be something you might want to look at also?
Don't know your budget but two, off the top of my head, would be the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM or the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX DC OS. The newest version of the Nikon 18-55mm with VRII, as has been mentioned a couple times now, really is a gem of a lens. Don't rule it out.
Ok, I've just had about enough. You've posted around 50 posts asking the same question over and over. Is there something you don't want to know or are you just trolling.
