New TC14III not compatible with 300f4

That's very interesting. It always baffled me a bit how Nikon can make their TC's so blasted expensive while also making them incompatible with anything but their upper tier lenses. I get why even some of their zooms and whatnot aren't, but a 300mm F/4 and a 1.4X seem like a well matched pair, even if there IS a plan for an update to the lens.

This puts my 300f4 on hold, wondering if a new version is close?

Interesting on how this coating works. Canon has been using it for a while with some of their top lenses.

Optically there is nothing in a TC to make it incompatible. Electrically the "ADF" and "AFS" lenses have the same set of contacts.

The problem with Nikon TC is mechanical. Their front element protrudes out, hence pushes into the lense. So if the last element in the lens is at or near the end, it or the TC will be damaged.

I think that Nikon omitted the 300F4, due to oversight. The last element in the 300F4 is way inside, and in no case can the TC front element touch it.

Oversight is what I also suspect but I am just basing on what Nikon posted. Physically, it should be compatible.

If its oversight ime Nikon will admit it,lets face it they are quick to put there hands up :D just joking dont shoot me

Never mind, the Nikon post is accurate. I didn't notice this statement.

"Because the maximum aperture coupling ridge and minimum aperture signal post are eliminated with the AF-S TELECONVERTER TC-14E III, “FEE” is displayed on the camera body when these lenses are used, disabling shooting.".

From my recent wildlife/birding interest its apparent the 300f4 plus the 1.4 has a big following. This may be yet another shot in the foot if they dont follow up with a new 300f4. The only other decent option would be the new 80-400, not as good as the 300/tc combo in my opinion.

OK Nikon has spelled it out. The 300mmF4 is not compatible with the new TC, but compatible with the older one.

Because the maximum aperture coupling ridge and minimum aperture signal post are eliminated with the AF-S TELECONVERTER TC-14E III, “FEE” is displayed on the camera body when these lenses are used, disabling shooting. I suspect that only "G" type lenses are compatible. Older "D" and non AF lenses are not.

Makes it unwise to invest in the 300!

Not really. With TC 1.4E-II it makes an excellent 420mm F5.6 lens. The next 300mm F4 will be "G" type, VR-II/III/IV (as the case may be) and as most of the internet Pundits think, at least twice the current $1,300/ street price. I would any day go with the lower cost option, as VR is of use hand held at slow speeds.
