I was thinking about using the U1 & U2 modes on my D7100, and thought It would be interesting to see how others are using this feature so I could get an idea of how I might use it. Thanks in advance!

I use UI for normal shooting Example. Auto ISO, Program mode. ready to shoot anything fast
I use U2 for Bird in flight. Manual with ISO and other things as I need tfor BIF

This way with I am out shooting BIF I switch to U2 and if i need to switch fast to shoot anything else I can switch fast back to U!

Best I can give is - use one for extreme sun, another for shade when you will have both present equally as much and need quick and reliable switch between two sets of settings. Another I've done is for car events - one bank for on-track/moving cars, and one for pits, people, etc.

There was a thread a few months back. I'll be lazy and paste what I said there:

I struggle to remember what my U's are set to, so I don't like to get too fancy. Another problem for me is that I will likely tweak some parameters and forget to save them, so the changes will be lost when changing modes. Or maybe I will save the changes and then I am back to forgetting what they are set to, lol. So my current thinking is one is set to emergency BIF settings in case something cool suddenly flies by. The other is set to general purpose shutter button focus in case I need to hand the camera to someone to take a picture. I normally use back button focus.

Also good to know... if you do find the perfect settings, you can back them up to an sd card. Use an old one and throw it in your bag since the info will be lost if you format the card. Its in the menus somewhere called save/load settings. Its good to do this anyway in case you have to do a reset, you can quickly get back all your customizations including the U's.

I have U1 setup for birds in flight, with auto iso, and fast shutter speed.

U2, more or less the same, but with slower shutter speed for wildlife which is not moving.

Thank you all for your helpful responses. Gives me some great ideas to get started, and makes me wish a U3 and U4 existed as well ;)

You have one set on A one set on P and a U1 and U2 ..that's 4 variations so you can tape up those wheels so they don't get knocked and just use the dial which has a lock on it ....happy days

On my D600, U1 is set for HDR. (HDR does not work if you shoot RAW, which I do at all other times.)

U2 is set for video, using "cinematic" settings recommended on various Youtube tutorials. (Reduced sharpness and saturation, primarily, to get more of a film look.)

Not sure I understand ... Unless you're talking multiple cameras

You can have settings under A ..f8 auto iso 1/30 etc etc and P will give you a wide aperture under dark conditions (disco etc) then you can have what you want on U1 and U2 eg for birds min 1/500 auto iso to 2000 f 5.6 ..four totally different setting sets.
