irritating Picture modes on Cheaper DSLR's

Some will not like this question and some will simply not understand it but hey just try. :)

In the 30 something years of taking pictures from 126 Cartridge, disc and both 35mm & 120 roll film and now moving into DSLR's; Can anyone really and truthfully explain what the point of the annoying picture modes are for ? As far as I see it they're for real total idiots, or those who use "like" as every second word and who cannot figure out the Aperture, Shutter, Program and Manual modes are.

The D2X doesn't have idiot modes

Oh who ever said the D2X will work without the CF Card door you're correct it does :) so happy [boo hoo now I need another reason to buy a digital Hasselblad "Thinks Golum and the precious"]

There are some people who do use those modes and use them well. Not everyone is into photography as deep as I am and just want to pick up the camera and get a decent photo. The Picture modes are a step up from the Auto mode.

Now I can tell you from a Super Moderator position that people do not like anyone who calls others idiots. That is not acceptable in this forum. Your post does not serve any purpose other than to put other people down.

Correct - all calling others idiots accomplish is to show the level of professionalism of the poster. He could have said amateur, tyro or newbe, all acceptable. Thanks to the moderator for not tolerating bad behavior.

I also agree, that there is no call for calling others idiots. Some people are deeply into photography, while some use cameras to record the moment. The scene modes in DSLR (as well as P&S cameras) are geared towards them. All they want is to take a "decent" picture, not great, not technically perfect, just an image to show friends. These images will be viewed mostly in FB or Whats App and rarely printed, and then to at the most a 6x4. In fact most people are using high MP cell phones just for that.

Tolerance to other's view is sign of advanced civilization. Look where intolerance has taken the terrorists and ISIS - self destruction.

What about picture modes on expensive DSLRs? You know.... like the D750, the D810.... the D5?????

Am I an idiot for using them on those cameras?

yes :) Because you know how to use a camera. But a newbie with an expensive Nikon can certainly learn from the Scenes mode if they're so inclined. Anything that gets a person off Auto is a step in the right direction, even if it's just a different Auto.

Have you actually seen what those modes actually do? They only change one paramater, such as sharpness, or saturation, or sharpness, or maybe white balance.

Chill, Sparky. He gave you a compliment. You have too much knowledge about photography to be using any of them. :) So yes, if you are caught using one of them, you will be at our mercy. ;)

I understand that. But my question is: how many people truly know what those modes actually do?

I, for one, haven't a clue. Never looked at them. ;) Learned on a manual 35mm Minolta that only offered aperture priority or manual modes. But I do think people new to DSLR's can benefit from them. It's a way to step up to a DSLR while learning the ropes of what they can do.

Switch from AUTO to, say, Landscape, all it does is change the Picture Control to Landscape. Nothing more.

ETA: I had to spend some time looking it up, but here's the chart I made back when I had my D7000:
