Distortion Control Data version 2 Firmware Released

Just so people are clear on this, Distortion Control is not applied to NEF files - it's JPEG only. If you use ViewNX2 (or whatever the current Nikon editing software is) then it will apply the distortion correction in post automatically. If you use Lightroom, Photoshop/ACR or DxO Optics Pro then each of those programs have their own lens profile corrections which may or may not be as good, or better, than Nikon's own. Those same profile corrections can be applied to JPEG's as well.

In other words, if you only shoot RAW and don't use Nikon software, this is an unnecessary upgrade for you.

Thanks for the clarification. I had assumed this was similar to some of the noise reduction firmware updates that I seem to remember applying in the past (even though I have in-camera NR disabled), but your explanation makes better sense.

Yeah, almost everything in the Shooting Menu that doesn't have to do with file type and resolution has no impact on RAW files (I'm not 100% on High ISO NR and I'm too lazy to Google it at the moment). The information about it is available in the RAW file for software to access and apply, if available, but a RAW file is simply just a collection of all sensor data captured by the exposure with a specific camera profile applied for initial viewing purposes.

That said, anything you turn on will impact the JPEG preview you see on the back of your camera. Why is this important? Because if your software doesn't apply it then your preview will look nothing like the RAW file you're presented with. So if you shoot JPEG, turn all that other stuff off - it'll process your image faster too.
